Makeshift piston ringsHi everyone
I've just had an enquiry about the grooves in pistons, like they take rings.
I've seen plenty of posts here about it, using string, or graphite string? Something like that.
Just wondering what you use for these grooves?
Cheers

Depends on the engine mate,
In some pistons (Mamod, Bowman) the narrow grooves just help retain oil...they don't need rings. On other engines (Mersey is a good example) you'll find a wider groove, which is designed to be packed - graphited yarn gives the best result.
On "serious" engines, Stuarts etc the pistons are fitted with nitrile rubber piston rings.

Ahh, ok thanks Mooseman
Really appreciated.
I had enquiry about the 1929 Meccano engine. I never noticed if my Dads had the grooves, but it does run ok.
Thanks again mate

Cheers | An old chap I brought a boat from used thread tape to take up the clearance in a worn engine , last for about 1 hours running
