Mamod Loco on big circuitAnother loco video I did today. I decided to get all my track together, well most of it, and try to build the biggest circuit I could.
I managed to come up with this after some very dodgey bridge building. The track isn't even anywhere but it goes a treat . From the last simpsons flower pot to the bin is quite steep as you can see Rosa slow down to get up the hill. It's not level right near the house, I think a blind man put my patio in. A few snapshots of the layout and Rosa running are below:
I counted the circuits of the track at 27 which is pretty damn good. It would do more if I could get the track a bit more level... but where is the fun in that?
Here you can see the uneven and dodgey bridge building I did
It gets very very close to the house as you will see in the video.
A bit of a change from the normal oval, and was great fun, and not half bad for Mamod's worst creation ever
Enjoy!

You've certainly worked your magic on Rosa MM! Can't wait to see her in the metal next year Plans are afoot for my garden line, final drawing soon I might just have to invest in some of those steel wheels, or maybe the spoke PPS ones

Yup! she runs a treat now
The steel wheels are good MTA fiddly to fit, but once they are on, they are more stable than the older Mamod ones. The spoked wheels are sweet
She goes forever on Titan's layout! just need the burner to last longer and i'll be getting much, much longer runs

Rubbish, you should have bought a roundhouse or accucraft.

I'd rather have one of these than an expensive accusomething, or a saddle tank version you can't beat a good Mamod/Mss loco

I dunno, for short railways with a small workload, Mamod/MSS locos are fine. For grand garden railways (like the one I'm planning), Accucraft's etc are perfect, as they are quite powerful

We are moving house soon and will be seriously on the hunt for more track. Now that Chris has bought his----we might stand a chance on the ebay scene --- heheheh joking. ACtually it seems to sell on Ebay for much the same as the new price so you have to be lucky to get anything cheap.
Look forward to seeing MM's even bigger track some day. Cheers G-J

I figured with track that you might just as well buy it new. Stuff on ebay always seems a bit random like say 3 straights and 2 curves or something. If you buy it new you can just buy what you want. And it isn't much more expensive new than the high price it fetches used on ebay.
Only stuff I bought used was 4 straights, and I still haven't got around to including those in my loop.
The loop on my recent outside videos is 8 straights, so it will be 12 straights when I put those in.

Yes thought so!
I got a box of straights with one of my loco sets and in there was about 8 straights I think . Ive got about 3 sets worth of track. I did have 4 but sold some! Wouldn't be anywhere near enough to go around the whole garden I'll extend the crappy "bridge" I made and see what happens!
Haven't ever had a de-railment with those steel wheels

No, just straights, curves and left/right points. Straights and curves are about £3 each, or you can get a box of eight. The points are much more expensive, £16 rings a bell.
I wouldn't bother with points unless setting up a garden railway or a permanent layout of some kind. Then if I did that I would probably use peco track anyway as it is more versatile and possibly slightly cheaper.

No you don't. It is virtually impossible to own a mamod loco.
What you really want is 2...3...4... mamod locos.
I think three is a nice number. My SL1 is running well so I will leave that as is now. I've got an MSS saddle tank going in the post today for something that looks a bit different but limited upgrade potential. Then I want another SL1 or similar for fiddling with and adding all the upgrades that doesn't matter so much if I mess up.

Sounds good to me chris!
Ive got an SL1 that needs repair then i'll see how that runs .
I guess what really really makes the difference is the upgraded pistons and safety valve.
A good sign of a loco when running is steam only coming from the smoke stack

Mine seems to do fairly long runs now, although I haven't timed it so I could just be imagining it. I have the wicks really short and they are like a fibreglass material and have glazed over a bit at the top. So I think it is burning the meths slower than it was originally.
Might just be imagining it as I generally stop the loco a few times to top up with meths and water.
I use a syringe for filling up with water through the top up valve. Are those plant spray things with a length of tube that you can buy for about £5 any good?

Yeah the bottles are fine, they work well! You don't usually get water thrown back at you anyway You can fill the boiler up in a matter of seconds
How do you fill the burner up again? The wicks should only be about 5mm I have mine just over that I think. ONce you get it running once you can top up and not wait ages for it to bring itself up to steam! The regulator doesn't half get hot though
It used to drip water from the exhaust chamber put I stuffed a sponge in there and that sorted that

I prefer OO gauge, I must say of what I have seen, esp at STIA they are bloody entertaining and fascinating to watch . . . .

I use a small syringe for topping up the burner. Have to be a bit careful not to squirt it though. Don't want a fireball. Also you need to top up before the wicks go out.
Also don't want to mix up the syringe I use for water with the one I use for meths!!
When topping up with water I don't seem to have to wait at all for the pressure to build back up, just open the regulator and send him on his way. I guess that as you are injecting water then there is no pressure drop, and the water soon gets back up to temperature.
I keep meaning to start a thread of "most useful tool", I have a small square of leather I use for handling the regulator so I don't get burnt, it also comes in handy for tightening safety valves, or undoing them after a run as it helps with the grip and stops the burns. Very useful.
I think my wicks are only about 3mm now, and they produce enough heat to keep steam up so happy with it for now. My meths burner doesn't fit that well though, the thumb screw doesn't go far enough into the slot in the loco to hold it really firmly. Anyway, made things more secure by fitting the chassis spacer upside down (groove upwards). Only problem with that is that you have to take the chassis spacer off to get the burner out.

Good tips Chris!
ITs probably those back screws on the chasis stopping your burner going back enough! I don't even have them in on Rosa as the buffers hold the thing together .
I light my burner differently to you Chris I have it out then plonk the loco on the top lift the burner up and i'm ready to go .I take it you light it through the holes in the chassis then?
I find that with the MSS steam dome I get more water in the cylinders than with the mamod one

I can't compare the MSS steam dome, as mine has the MSS one, and I haven't ran one with a normal mamod one. I do need to clear water out of the cylinders before the first run, after that it is fine.
Lighting is fairly procarious, involves sticking a match up from underneath. Only had flaming meths raining out of it once. Ordered a meths burner for the saddle tank, so will see what that is like when it arrives.
