Mamod MM2I recieved my mamod MM2 on friday and am just getting around to posting it up on the forum.
Pics will be later for all you eager SOBs
It runs really well and am pleased I gave it a little mini restoration, cleaned the boiler, replaces the rubber O ring on the saftey valve.
I also replaced the burner stuffing, for those who were wondering its NOT asbestos. Its a VERY flamable material probably cotton.I put new cotton in and some ASBESTOS
I did this to help make the burner last alot londer and it work ALOT better than before I did everything outside so dont worry Rog.
This one was the one on ebay which had the exhaust line over top of the saftey valve but I can get it out with a bit of angleing.
Just a few questions in general about the model.
How much water does the boiler hold? I found that 2/3 of a cup works, should it be more or less?
how ofter should I oil it? on my mamod te1a the piston wore down on it I believe due to lack of oil.
How do I prevent the oil from running down the boiler and going to the burner?
any other hints and tips would be handy.
Thanks

Fill it enough so it doesn't prime... there is a way of filling them, balance the front of it on the burner and fill till it comes out the safety valve hole.
Just keep it well oiled during a run using thick ish oil, shouldn't wear out.. none of mine ever have

I usually oil every time I refill the boiler, though I usually only take the piston right out before and after a run. I just drizzle some oil into the cylinder in front of the piston when it's deep in the cylinder (it's how you oil Empire valve engines, so it can't be all bad a method).
I tend to oil the port face block fairly often, just because I love making messes and wasting oil
(being quasi-facetious, as the boss would say)

Lob loads of oil on it. It's great when it drips down onto the boiler and then runs round and drips on to burner, you get that white smoke and a lovely smell. It's all part of the live steam experience.
I wonder if aroma therapy oils would work too?

I put grease in the cylinder and on the portfaces. It helped it out with sealing up the piston.

thats a really elegant solution to the lack of exhaust on the MM2, not like this one on ebay at the mo....ugh.
Me and Dad always thought it would be neat to put a exhaust pipe on our MM2, although putting the steam pipe back on would be a good start!

Doubles as a carry handle I expect
I'm planning on doing some exhaust work on my Jensen 85, now that I've got the boiler to stop flopping over when it runs..
Cool stuff, Ranger. I never appreciated the fun value of small engines until I had a bunch of bigger ones.
Should make a good mobile. You've probably seen the videos of the mobile 85 on youtube, and then there's Crabfu's little fleischmann vertical rover
That chemical-converted Jensen 35 on ebay would be killer too..
