The attraction to model steam is that element of danger or unexpected disaster

burnt hole in carpet, cylinder flew off MM1, many burns, almost forgot to replace jet oiler cap on Wilesco Roller, narrowly avoiding hot oil being spurted out everywhere.... The list goes on

We're all human Lewis, just one of those things
When the cylinder came off my SW1 it happened because it happened!
Was going a fair old speed though

remeber once when i lit the burner and the meths was on my hand
i think you can tell what happened next

The governor drive belt flew off in a run and hit me on the head. My SL1 burst into flames, including track. Bowman pipes got stuck and so much pressure built up that the safety valve sort of blew up and lots of steam gushed out right in front of me.......happy times.

No accidents here, just burnt fingers from whistle/throttle operation.
Occasionally get hot water on me when emptying boilers, esp my MM1 or MM1, which after a run I turn upside down, turn flywheel opposite to pump water out of boiler through exhaust.
Is it possible to run and have fun with a mamod without getting burnt?
Nah

No harm whilst running an engine but when cracking open an old verticle boiler I wiped the solder off the boiler onto a wet cloth then rotated the cloth to get a clean bit and wiped the semi molten solder onto my hand....
Glad it was only soft solder not silver solder, soft melts at about 200C, silver at about 600C.

The odd burn't finger here too.
When I was about 10 years old I saw my friend try and refill a lit meths burner on his TE1a . Luckily the meths in the 'plastic' bottle did not ignite.

Not a Mamod story, but when my Bowman 234 flew off the track and rolled over, I grabbed it with my bare fingers without a moment's thought....as somebody later said, you can always grow new skin, but where are you going to get a 234 like that....
