Mamod paintsB&Q and other shops have spray Plasticote enamel paints the red is spot on for bases also the green is exact for the boiler saddle plates and frames for flywheels inc old type fuel wick fuel containers.
I think that one has to accept that he original paint was hard enamel baked on. The replacement paint is celulose based and will not stand the heat as well. The Halfords matt black is for car manifolds so thats up to the job and shouldn't blister and fall off
If the paint is Matt then you can use plasticote clear laquer to add a shine.

I'm experimenting with Hycote Engine Enamel Gloss Black for fireboxes. It claims to stand a fair heat and its GLOSS! I Hope it works. Dead cheap on ebay.

I find that each engine base has subtle differences in shade.
For bases, I usually T Cut the old paint to remove any dirt and oxidation, then take it down to Halfords and match it as close as possible.
I've never failed to find a match yet.
