Mamod rolling road/test bed.

Won this recently:

Nice mint French set . . . I like them.

Needed some more parts for the test bed and my crane.

Been tinkering around with the idea for a while - something Roly mentioned go me thinking!

Will post up pics soon . . . .

A few pics, still tinkering around with a few ideas - just a good excuse to relax with some Meccano . . .

Hopefully I will get something that will allow the engine to run under steam and also turn over woth the aid of an electric motor too.

A nice clean set - just how I like my Meccano.

Wow that looks really good Mike! Have you test steamed it yet? Maybe its something for STIA 2008?
MTA

Nice one Mike, I may have to construct one myself, although it may mean having to take apart my beloved crane

Decided to go for a chain drive, with rubber tyres flange wheels to hold the wheel in position. Still stuff to do, but you get the idea.

If it works OK Ill bring it to STIA next year as Im going for a mobile themed display.
Chris

Nice one. I was thinking along the lines of having rollers under the wheels at the front as well (or roller in the case of an SR1). Then having a drive belt going from the back rollers of the rolling road to those at the front. Then all the wheels would go round when the engine is ran.

I have too many other things to do at the moment, but instead of using meccano I was thinking of using small rollers used for conveyor belts. So two rollers for the front wheels, two rollers for the back wheels with them connected with a drive belt.

Nice job, will be good to see how it goes. Nice idea with the electric motor, I hadn't thought of doing that at all.
SPOKESMAN

Thanks Chris, its untested yet!
James

Looks great Mike. Maybe at STIA 2008 I could put my showmans on it, power the wheel which powers the dynamo

Maybe, dont think they will be heavy enough.
James

Don't think what will be heavy enough?

The mobile to get sufficent traction to drive the wheels/motor.
James

Ahh I see. The showmans is pretty heavy though.

Twice as heavy as a N&B SR1
Wallace

Great stuff Mike.

Sorry if I missed it, but what is the electric motor for?
SPOKESMAN

To turn it over as a display piece.

I might use it at STIA next year.
Wallace

Ahh ok, I see now. Nice one!
sparky

mike only just seen this thread thats brillaint, nice one
SPOKESMAN

Not ready yet, the flange wheels to hold and drive the rear wheel around are too shallow. I have another plan . . . .
sparky

good good

it really is a fun idea to try out though
SPOKESMAN

Just about sorted this little number now. Rebuilt the 'rollers' so it stay put on them . . .

Just need to steam it and get some batteries . . . .

The motor could also be used in reverse as a dynamo to power a bulb when the engine is under steam (depends on how fast it will go).

You could also measure the voltage generated at the motor and use it as a form of engine power measurement / comparison device.

Great fun all-round.
SPOKESMAN

Aye be tinkering with it all week!
Chris

Looks good, how about a video of it in action?
SPOKESMAN

I will when I get time!!!
SPOKESMAN

Gave the rolling road its inaugural test this morning - worked a treat!

here are a few pics, I will post a vid later.

Used my original SR1a from 1973 for the run . . .
Lewis

looks good mike cant wait for the video
tmuir

Good stuff.
Now put some flat rechargeable batteries in the battery box fire up the roller and get it to charge the batteries.

Not once you've ran them over with the steam roller.
Chris

Looking forward to the video. Looking good.
SPOKESMAN

Here it is Chris!

James

Impressive Mike, looks great!
Wallace

That is fantastic Mike.

Might have to make one myself. That way I can run my Mobiles more often, rather than having to move my car out all the time
SPOKESMAN

Good idea Wallace - it was Roly back along that planted the seed in my head!
SPOKESMAN

Forgot to say this works for a TE1/a too. Next step is to make it fit an SW1. I feel the need for yet more Meccano coming on!
Knowsnothin

Bloody hell Mike that is fantastic
I dont think I have ever been on the Meccano thread before
As I only have 4 girders, so cant make anything
Very impressed Mike, Im gona have to build one of those
If you get time Mike could you make a list of parts needed

Aye OK - although be warned I tend to over engineer things!
