Mamod SE1A conversioN!

hey guys, just surfing mamod's on eBay then had a thought.
Could i make an SE2A from a SE1A boiler?..i would add the exhaust regulated piston and whislte etc... are they the boilers the same size?  tell me what you think

cheers

The 2 has more openings in the boiler for one thing, no whistle.
cam-steaman

yea my plan was the make a thread there to have a machined whistle.
Atticman

I think the boilers are the same size, apart as John says from the whistle attachment.

but personally i would try and get an SE2a off ebay, they really are quite cheap at times, less than £20 if you find a poorly listed one, and so the extra work involved wouldnt really be worthwhile.

It can be done but as others have indicated it won't really be worth it.

Also if you add the exhaust regulator it won't be a Se2a as you won't have a reverse lever unless you put a SE3 type regulator in.

The boilers are the same size.
The 3rd engine I ever bought was actually the reverse of what you want to do. It had a SE2 boiler, with SE1a base and pipework. I didn't know any better

Are you looking to make an engine out of parts??

The SE1A doesn't have the reversing lever either.  Also you have to be more exact with the threaded collar (1/4" BSF) for the SEA engines as there is nolip on the outside of the boiler (like with the earlier (SE1-2 engines) and therfore needs a very tight fit between the cut down, small inner ring on the the collar and the hole in the boiler.

The engine blocks between the two aren't compatible either, I can't see how you can have both the reversing lever and the throttle on the same block.  If you want both, you'd be better off putting a regulator on the steam pipe coming out of the boiler, like the ones on the SE3's and having the reversing lever on the engine block.  However, that would mean putting another collar (again 1/4" BSF) in the boiler where the steam pipe normally comes out.

yes wallace, i am looking to make an engine out of spares/parts

Hi cam

Depending on what spares you have, why not try a MM2 converted into a vertical, or something I'd like to do if I had the right spares. A SE3 boiler and pipework setup to run 2 SE2 or SE1 engines.
