Mamod SE4 Video!!Yes that's right, finally got around to firing the SE4 up today. I managed to sort out the leaky whistle with a shoving a bit of material in the thread and fully tightening the whistle. Seemed to do the trick, leaked a little... need some material for the next run I think.
I thought for the first run I'd cut the wicks really low. They were no more than 1mm above the wick tubes. Some barely above. I just wanted to keep them low as a first test . The burner seemed to work well, for a faster/better run i should have the wicks slightly higher
Filled up the boiler with boiled water
Filled the oiler up with steam oil
Oiled everything up for a smooth run
Filled the burner light the burner shove under it's belly...
Full steam was reached fairly quickly, and few a few flicks of the flywheel it was away, grabbed the camera after a few minutes and took some pictures and a video. I hope you can hear me, the microphone was on the front of the camera, so yeah... hopefully you can.
Most of the steam oil is pushed out the lubricator pretty quickly
It's a messy little thing
Video
There we have it then guys! runs well I think. Could do with a bit more heat from the burner (higher wicks) but I can do that now knowing the firebox won't burn off.
It was Moosemans idea of baking hammerite and it worked really really well. It's pretty much unmarked, infact I would say it is. Should be ok now . I'm happy with the run anyway.
Enjoy!

Fantastic machine MM.
It runs like a clock.
That engine isn't even trying mate. A bit longer wick and it will fly I'm sure.
It sounds like it's just ticking over.
Really enjoyed the vid. Magic stuff.
In fact I'm hust going to watch it again.

Cheers Sandy
A couple of o rings and higher wicks it'll fly!
I was being a bit of a wuss for the first run . All the oil just flew out in a matter of seconds

Your wick burner certainly looks the part. Well done

What a stunner.
Can't wait to see it at Lincoln (hint hint)

MM,
That was simply sweet...runs like that's it's job...which it is!!!
Wonder on the oil passing thru so quick if you might be using stuff that is a bit too light weight?? I personally would try the thickest steam oil I could find, then again, maybe that is the nature of the beast...wants a drink of oil right off the bat!
Thanks for sharing, super.

Cheers guys i think the steam oil used to be a bit thicker, although it was a a lot colder back then and its probably a bit thin due to the recent warm weather . Normal car oil would probably fall straight through in seconds
Next i'll try cranking up the heat It's an engineering masterpiece So smooth

Lovely!
Look forward to more videos, but that seems to be a great first run.
Is that the burner you made?

A very smooth run MM. Plenty of SE4 mess!
Sounds a lot quieter than mine . . . I think it needs running a bit more!

Yes it wasn't running at full wack. If i made the wicks higher it would go a lot quicker!
Yes thats the burner I made Chris! Did the job well

Great job MM! Must be very satisfying that your burner powered the SE4 so well.

Very nice MM... it looks and sounds great! I'm sure it'll go a lot faster with a bit more heat, but I like seeing engines just ticking over; it's easier to see whats happening.

Nice one MM. How's the decal holding up so far? How long a run did you get out of it?

I'm happy with how it ran! and how well the burner worked too!
Not too much heat under there with the very low wicks, but it got the job done

Certainly did get the job done mate. Well done!!

Was thinking earlier MM it would be good if you, or another restoration chap, could do a guide to painting similar to your guide on soldering.
Along the lines of....
1. how to get the old paint off
2. how to get the finish of the metal right before painting
3. do you apply primer?
4. how to apply the top coats...how many coats.
5. do you bake or not, if so approx how long, what temp...
Just like an idiots guide.
The information is already on the site, but you would have to search for it through various restoration posts.

I can do Chris! i'm not strictly a 100% paint expert but I've thinking about doing a paint matching thread etc before
Something I'll do Chris! thanks for the tip off

Would be a great idea to do a painting guide.
I was going to say there is one in the Steam Ref library, I thought there was but there isn't.
Would be a good reference for everyone

Yeah I thought there was one mate. I remember you did one, I added, and I was going to move it to the library.
I think it's in Tech Tips, I'll have a look

One thing to remember about baking is different temperatures work better for different brands and types of paints, what is good for one brand may ruin another brand of paint.
