Mamod SP4 Tidy Up

I traded this engine off Tony Muir and it arrived yesterday.  It is in pretty good condition and only needs a bit of work to be done to bring it up to scratch.  I will try to remember to take pics as I go.

First pic is as supplied by Tony.  He has resoldered the whistle bush and added screws to the rear of the boiler instead of the rivets   why use rivets in the first place ?

Today I stripped it down and gave the base a good wash in hot water with some dishwashing liquid added.  After rinsing well with boiling water I taped up the base and resprayed the silver section as it had some wear.  Came up quite well I think

Next step will be to ........

looking great so far mate!
tmuir

Looking good.

I'll tell you the story now how the silver base got damaged...

I quite often spray really dirty steam engines when I get them with engine degreases as I'm lazy and its a quick way to get the engines clean. Has always worked perfectly on the other engines I've sprayed, so imagine my shock when I discovered the degreaser was also dissolving the silver paint.

I quickly washed it off but too late the damage had been done.
Guess Mamod is now using cheaper paint on their engines as degreaser is fine on the older engines.

Do check that my soldering is good on the whistle bush before you put the site glass in as it will be a bugger to find out afterwards.

I'm looking forward to that engine running.
Les

That is looking good so far. Thumbs up!

I have used degreaser on some dirty Wilesco's before with no problem, don't think I will anymore though.  Reread you advice on checking the soldering today as well.
Wallace

That'll come up really nice.

I am home alone tomorrow, so I should get a lot more done.  If I stay off the computer.

Just use washing up liquid. Thats what its for to degrease your pans, works the same for everything

Just don't use it on your car!
paul_c

This morning I fitted up the cylinder and flywheel assembly, nice and easy.  Lubricated everything along the way.

Also cleaned up the boiler and checked for obvious leaks.

and then I fitted the sight glass, I applied sealer to the boiler face and the gasket.  Making a mental note to put the facia the right way up.  Then I dropped the window part, found it, put it all together and was half way through putting in the first rivet when I noticed the gauge was upside down      now I have a minimum mark instead of a maximum

Probably safer in the end because I am fitting a water top up valve to this one.  I will wait and see if the sight glass leaks, if it does'nt it stays that way.

Fitted all the other bits but I won't solder on the steam pipe untill the week end as Me is coming out to Petrie and bringing some new chrome side plates with him.

It will be steaming away next week
steamyman

looks great. well done.
Les

Mirko, did you read my text ?

... well done, Paul! The upside down sightglas-frame givers it a certain uniqueness.

Me likes! Me wants to have!

I like that, I knew when I squeezed the rivet gun that i had forgot to recheck the position of the facia, but it was to late
tmuir

Looking good.
I hope all my soldering I did holds up.

If not I did give you 2 extra rivets.

I filled it today with boiling water and there was no sign of any leaks, see how it goes under pressure
paul_c

New chrome firbox plates and front arrived today, thanks Mrs Me for posting them.  Fitted them up and soldered on steam pipe.

Looks like new now

Filled the boiler with water and split one Mamod fuel tablet, just enough for a short run ....

Very happy with that

Well your car is running around without any paint protection from the sun. It will go very dull and possibly damage after a while
tmuir

Glad you got it running and it runs well.
It would of sat on my shelf for years before I got to it and it deserved better than that.
James

Very nice! Well done!
Les

Very nicely done.

At least you can eat food off the bonnet though MM
xlchainsaw

you have done a fine job on that one paul well done
Nick

Very nice job.

What's the Mamod boiler in the background off of? Another restoration?
paul_c

Another SP4.  It is steamyman's old one, I bought it for parts and saw that it had a screw on sight glass so I decided to fix it up as well.  See this thread -

I will post some pics of the resto when I have some time
