Mamod SP5 RestorationBought this SP5 off ebay for 30 quid quite recently. It's a nice little engine in a way but she needs some work.
Firstly the engine has a few faults:
1) in true Mamodman style, we have a broken whistle thread. Not sure why someone has stuck an old whistle on it, but that will come in handy. It's an easy, knock the end off job and stick it back on again when done
2) Someone has stuck the chimney on the wrong way, not sure why but it won't come off, not really tried anything yet, but it was the first thing I noticed.
3) two pipes down near the engine block have come off. These will need careful soldering, will strip the engine down to do that, otherwise one slip and the paint on the base is history!. The trickiest job in soldering Mamods this, so taje my time etc.....
Apart from that it looks ok base is in excellent condition, all the parts are there (minus the burner and safety valve) got a few spare valves anyway so that's a job done. Not sure what i'm going to do with this one. It's gone to top of the list anyway.
Will start cleaning a few bits up either tonight, or tomorrow

Will try my best MTA
Soldering those two pipes will be tricky! will possibly invent some sort of jig to hold them in place, then possibly 'tin' them, and hope it works
Cheers Lewis, plenty of SP5's out there! they are very good engines, mega fast!. Better runners than SE3's! and that is saying something. Must be that large flywheel!

i still have throbs when i see the old G+G sp5 at my school and the condition they keep it in
aye they do have big flywheels

The chimney is a push fit, it is held by 4 bast pegs at each corner.

I'd offer 'em a tenner for it
The SP range are fairly robust, just those silly chrome firebox sides that annoy me a bit. They slide out easily enough though

I know , but someone has forced it on the wrong way Mike, I don't even know how he's done it, looked on mine and it wouldn't ever go on that way

Having two is greedy Lewis
So I might sell it when I get the chance. Will need some work first though!. Only plans are to make is a runner, and clean it up of course

A big part of the credit goes to Mamod of course!
Can't wait to give it a run with a video of course

It'll be fine I'm sure! I haven't really had a good look at one of these before but they're quite interesting aren't they? I'll be interested to see a video when its done!

They are interesting, they are quite unusual for a Mamod. Especially that big reverse lever
They don't half shift Steve couldn't believe it when I fired my other one up!!

Congrats on your ebay win, MM! I'm looking forward to hearing about the work
and the vids n pics, of course. I hate to admit it, but I don't quite understand the
reverse mechanics yet. None of my models have it. If it happens that it is able to
be removed, could you show pics and maybe that way I'll get it.

The reverse setup works by a lever that adjusts the cylinder up or down, to change exhaust ports.
So in a reversing engine, the steam pipe to the cylinder is in a set position with exhaust ports above and below the steam pipe.
For the engine to run forward the cylinder is in the lower postion, so it's using the bottom exhaust port. The top exhaust is unused.
Pull the lever, and the whole cylinder adjust upwards, so then it uses the top exhaust port, and the bottom one becomes unused.
If that makes sense.
Put it this way. I don't have a pic of the reversing setup handy, but my 2 MM1's run in different directions because of exhaust port positions
In this one note the exhaust port is at top
It runs with the top of flywheel heading toward the chimney
This one runs the other direction (wrong way). Note the steam pipe is at the top, the exhaust underneath. On a MM2, and MM1's the exhaust should be at the top
|
yosa
|
That's a subtle little difference Wallace. I hadn't picked up on it.
I'll have to check my two MM1's, the nice original, and the rip off one.

Yosa, it took me ages to work it out.
I think it was the 3rd or 4th engine I ever owned, so real new to collecting.
I spent about 1hr to get it to work as I kept flicking flywheel the wrong way (well right way if it was built right).
Was ready to contact the seller
I think it's a factory fault, not sure. If it wasn't it was a neat job by an owner

Its quite clever the way they set up the reversing...its so so simple and very effective! At one point with my other SP5 I was flicking the lever forward and backwards and it was not stopping!
Please don't tar this SP5 with the same brush as the new ones! It is of exceptional quality!

Pity the old SP5 I had was a dud
I won it for about 33pound in pretty good condition. Well looks wise anyway

Well I think it's worth a try. It's giving them a bad name throughout now!
and i'm annoyed that people always seem to bad mouth the new range, rather than look at the quality of the old range!

I'm with Mike all the way Jimbo.
We have a better forum here than ever we had with Mamod.
Linking up with them again would open up exactly the same problems as we had before.
This is the real Mamod forum as far as I'm conscerned.

Totally agree guys!
I don't want to be associated with anything the Terry family do with Mamod now, they constantly ignore e-mails, produce shite stationary models, and only listen to one side of the story.
Clowns!

Nah it didn't. Was a right shame actually. Something wrong at steam port/cylinder faces. Leaked alot, and I even stretched springs and screw trunion screws right up.
Might have been a reverse lever problem.
It was my first go at solid fuel though, now it put me off that rubbish Dried cows*%t would probably burn and smell better.
James, about us being the offical forums for Mamod.
Please no
Others have said it, I know, but No
It's freedom of speech here, which is what I like.
My biggest gripe on the old forums were inconsistency. Once in a blue moon the admin would be on and post "please stay on topic". Don't worry about all the other off topic posts, just the ones he saw.
I heard a webmaster, with nothing to do with steam was the admin. Don't know if it's true, but wouldn't suprise me.
