Mamod TE1 1964 nut and boltJust arrived today is this nice little Mamod TE1, It's from around 1964. Very similar to the flat canopy version which is so famous, but this was the first TE to have the 'ribbed canopy' . It lies inbetween the flat canopy and the normal 65 TE1 with the red canopy stickers.
This will need a good clean and polish from top to bottom, not too bad condition, all very do-able. Canopy writing is excellent. Last one I sold to a member of the forum, this one will remain here
Will get it polished and cleaned when I get the time, but i'm very happy with it. Sits nicely in my collection of TE's that has been growing slowly through the past year

Very nice MM, look forward to seeing the results of the clean up.
There is just something about the old nut and bolters that set's them apart.

MM...that is a grand example of Mamod's best IMO...I think if a person assembled a TE, SR and SE3, they would have the best of Mamod. I know how that will shine when you are done with it...classic!

Well, as I'm the one lucky enough to own MM's last one of these, I can confirm these are great. I'd even go as far as to suggest they maybe rarer than the flat canopy version. This is only the second one of these I've seen. I know MM's skill with these old TE's and I know it will look very special when he has finished.
MM, that TE collection is growing. How many different ones have you got now?

Good one MM, there's something about an N & B engine that seems to make it more realistic, the riveted versions 'just don't cut the cake'. Hmm, I might have to reassess no more mobiles rule - and make an exception, Cheers

I await the cleanup in great anticipation.

Yes these were probably very short in production time! This one is a little rough round the edges but it doesn't warrent a re-paint
I'll see what I can do with this one
I agree with Rog though, a collection without a mamod TE is like a fish out of water

I've been watching these over the past year and any TE's with good quality gold lettering, go for over £100 and a few will reach the £150 mark.

Really pleased with the canopy on this one, came up really nicely in the end! I didn't overpolish the wheels because there are machine marks, that I wanted to keep! Chrome came up nicely too (Just don't sand them), its playworn paint is worn off and chipped
I love it

is admirable. So is the result!

I'm of the strip and paint crowd, but I also admire a nice piece with the crud removed and the age wear allowed to show.

How do you get to the chrome sides of the firebox? Do you remove the rear wheels?

Yeah I remove the rear wheels, makes the wheels easier to clean too! The caps can be a bit of a pain, Ive broken a few in the past

Thanks MM,
I had been reluctant to do that, worried I would break the caps. I know I can get replacements from the UK but I do not have a US source.
Now I will have a go with the TE1A we've owned for 39 years.

It may be picturesque here, but the local hardware stores do not stock caps.

I bet they have them at Ace, which they dont have here, the local Hardware store isnt all that big here.

MM,
What is your preferred technique for getting the caps off? I started to try to lever them off with a screwdriver but the wheels just seemed to be compressing the firebox.
Stopped because I don't want to break anything with replacements 3 weeks away. Maybe I'll order some before I indulge.

Quite right, chef.
I really would like the benefit of MM's restoration expertise in many areas. This example is truly astonishing and has given me aspirations to do the same with my long loved and well worn TE1A.
This is the one where the odometer is going around the clock for the second time.

She'd clean up well Richard!
Like a car, she may have been round the clock three times, bodywork a little rough. But she still needs her TLC once in a while

If you can pull out the little tabs holding it on, if you can't grip it with some decent grips and twist and pull

Richard theres a thread on TE restoration, and heres some stuff on hub cap removal
8_10 Brass Cleaner wrote:
Removal of hubcaps off Mamod mobiles is simplicity itself. You dont even need a pliers
Have a look at one, you will see two small flaps that dig into the metal. All you need to do is to bend the outer edge of the hubcap 'in' next to these flaps so that these flaps ease off the axle. The cap will then fall off. No scratched paint, no twisting, and no swearing.
i tried this method today hmm how to bend the outer edge in.! easier said than done. however i beleive this method is the best that ived tried. i ended up using my vice just open enough to insert the hub cap with the "tabs" facing the jaws. then it took 3 sharp hits with the hammer to bend the tabs in. close the vice up tight to grip the cap and lift off. takes about 1 minute. then by tapping the cap flat again its in reuable condition. ive also noticed that mamod leaves the end of axle rough that is doesnt bevel the end of the axle. this explains the great difficulty sometimes.

Mamodman123

Ive twisted them off easier by gripping that part of the hub cap. They do snap quite easily, so be careful!

Thanks for the invaluable advice.
I think I'll invest in some spare caps before I give it a go.

I will go by the hardware store next time I am out, I dont think the caps cost much at all either.

If you order Mamod ones, go for the screw on/off ones.
