Mamod wick burnersHmmmm today i ws trying to figure out how the old mamod wick burners were made. I tried to think of every way someone could make it but just got even more confused.
Ok ignore the wick tubes and feeder pipe thats pretty obvious how thats made.
How on earth did they make the tanks? They seem to have the illusion that they are made in two parts because of a seem that runs right around the tanks. The tanks look to be in 2 halves both of which look the samethickness so it can't be a case of one pushed over the other like a tin can?
Here's a few pictures to fuel your brains
What metal are they made from tin? they certainly aren't brass anyway.....
Cheers guys

Top of the bottom half has the rim pressed to slightly reduce daimeter.
Top half then sits over nice & snug, minimal solder & away it goes.

I thought it could be soldered, but you can't see it too well under paint

maybe its heated then put inside and as it cools squeezes it together

My 3 wick burner is only very lightly sprayed, so the seam is still obvious.

All has been revealed then Mike. I may have an up and coming project so I need to know how they were made.

Pretty sure it's tin.
Not much sold in tins nowadays, maybe small vaseline tin will do?

I've looked at one today and it looks ideal, maybe a little thin, but i'll bare it in mind.

shoe polish tins would be more like the old se4 burner (4 wick), as in the pics posted by phantom -

It's an SE3 with 4 wick.
Is that a shoe polish tin? or the real deal? either way it's been repainted!

Probably is the real deal, or a very very good replica.
Looks very similar to th 2 wick burner here, which i can confirm is hobbies
|

Yes, I have the same 2 wick burner with my Hobbies SE1, MJ
That is definatly Hobbies, as you said, excellent replica, or original. Hard to tell as the light isn't the greatest

Re the 3 burners above
What was the 1 wick hobbies burner for?
What make is the 3 wick burner, as it's completely different?

I honestly don't know. There was no Hobbies 1 wick burner of that size.
MM1- too big although one wick
MM2- 1 wick possible?
SE1- 2 wick
SE2- two wick
SE3- four wick
SE4- FIVE wick
Does it match that? it's from a '39 MM2 can't be a Hobbies burner?

I'm sure it's the same as that.
My theory is that the burners were possibly made by an outside contractor & geoffrey malins used the same supplier for his ealry mamod burners. Eventually designing his own to distinguish it from hobbies.

Effectively, the Mamod burners were the same as the Hobbies ones.
Only the Minor burners differed as he didn't produce them for Hobbies.
I guess if it's the same then you have part of the rarest Mamod ever unfortunatly you need the other part to make it worthwhile
I bet someone would pay really good money for that! but seriously, NEVER sell, just to be awkward

It's an mm1 burner, see pages 19 & 50 (or 51 if your optimistic) of the bible.

Well you have the burner there, so it will be easier for you to see.
Interesting to see it's a MM1 burner I've not strictly seen a pre-war MM1 in real life or ebay. I've seen one minus the firebox, base, burner.
They were only made 39/40 so very rare indeed!

A project, MM? I'm intriqued. I think they're tin. It may be hard to copy a Mamod
burner. You could check Ebay...old tin collectors put up the oddest things. Medicine
tins, tins for balms and salves look pretty good. Another is BB gun pellet tins. Can
you still get tins of Vaseline? Everything seems to be in plastic over here.
As you can see, I have nothing really close to the Mamod burners shown...

Good point about the BB pellet tins.
I have a few at my parents place I think. Can't recall the brand, but lid fits the base perfectly

I’ve been pondering this question for a while my mm2 will need a burner. The tins are made from tinplate; this is thin sheet steel that has a coating of tin applied to it, electrically in this case. I was lucky enough a number of years ago to buy 6 empty tins at an antique fair. They were exactly the same as the ones used by mamods, they have the flat base and recessed lid as per the burners. I have used all the tins now for burners, the nearest I can get is the Vaseline tins. They need some work to look right though, they have a rolled edge to the lid that needs to be removed, the radius of the lid is too big and the recess needs to be added, a good starting point. Tins are generally made by using a power press to "draw" the material into the deep shape; it’s not something that can be done easily. i can confirm that the 3 wick burner is a Mersey one

I think i have it sorted, although i'm trying to make a larger burner, the size of a pre-war SE3 or the later SE4 burner! IVe found a tin to only be one mm out in width and one mm out in height. It'll need soldering together and a thread put in for a cap but it will look original when i'm finished

Keep us posted on your progress, MM. I was just up at the drug store looking
for Nivea creme tins! No tins unfortunately, just plastic bottles. Local
beauty supply store might have something, though.

I think this one came from Boots, whether you have those in America

No worries will let you know when I find them.
It fits a raised base SE1 quite well.
I think they were German Brand. I use to always get the stingers, in a box, but got onto these ones ages ago.
On the lid it's painted, and has a picture of the type of pellet (.177cal).
So whether it be pinted, dome flat top.
I recall the dome tops were called "superdome".
I'll check it out in the next few days

If one wanted to make a lot of them it could be done. You could send an
example to a container factory and get a quote. They could also tell you
particulars of how close it would match the original.
I got so chuffed making my own steam engine that I visited
websites like that, also ones that produce brass parts.

MM,
I've posted the early SE3 burner dimensions on this thread :-

With a view to doing the same for the SE4 burner.
Enjoy.
