Mamod Xperts required please

I just recieved this piece I purchased on ebay recently and its bigger than i expected it to be . Can someone tell what year it may be and are the parts kosher especially the burner please?

Everything looks to be the same as mine, except that they have stripped the engine frame and mine has a 2 wick burner not a vap burner. Now the 'bible' has been proved to be wrong before, but it says that the raised base was intorducted in 1953 along with the Mazak flywheel and the vap burner came in in 1958.

Cheers

Thanks Chris, the burner looks way too new but there dont appear to be any indents in the base to locate the the older style one .

What model exactly is it please?
Graham-Jilly

I believe its a MM2 brass flywheel and I think it should have a 2 wick burner corect me if im wrong gus please
Wallace

Nice engine Cranko.

Just to add, it's 48-52 model.

You said about no dents in the base?

So you mean the base has no slots in it to hold the stem of a wick burner?

Basically, it should have 2 long slots cut out of the base, side by side, right in the middle of the base. These slots aren't fully cut out, but rather bent up. Then the wick burner stem sits between the bent up bits.

Hope that helps a bit

Hi Wallace , the base is completely flat with no cuts or anything, should it have rubber feet on the corners
Wallace

Sounds like it was a made up base mate

Did you get it off ebay?

Yeah, they usually have rubber feet. Some flatbases had wooden feet I have heard.

Pre War flatbases didn't have any feet

My MM2, like yours had rubber feet, held on by eyelets, but the feet are long gone.

I managed to find a suitable replacement foot for my 48SE2 from the bottom of a stereo (PC's are other possibilities).

For other missing flatbase feet, I use these from Bunnings. They are stick on, or you could drill them and use a nice brass nut and bolt to hold them on.

It's the closest I could find. Found in the section of hardware stores that have the castors, felt protectors for chairs etc

I think it should have something to hold the burner in only my 46 MM1 hasn't

Yeah sure, give me a few minutes and i'll take some pictures.

Someone may have made that flatbase as it should have holders for the burner
Mamodman123

there you go, see the burner holder slots
Minor1PJG

Wow, that really is nice.

I really do need a flat base MM1 in my collection
Cranko

Thanks very much MM , i must have a closer inspection tomorrow
Cranko

I have had a closer inspection and there are the punched guides in the firebox but not out side to align the tank part of the burner, is this common or not

Hi John,

I've chercked all my tank style wick burner engines, both flat and raised base, those prior to 1948 (flat base in my collection) don't have the tabs for the tank or the channel for the the burner tube. From 1948 onwards they have both the tank tabs and the burner channel. I thought, at first, your base plate might have been from an earlier engine but I think it's the wrong shape (too narrow).

Cheers
