Mamods round 'New' solid fuel tabletsThey probably aren't new, but what are peoples opinion on them?
I used loads at STIA and I thought they were particularly bad. Considerably worse than the older ones. They are harder to light, and they just don't last long enough. Even less than the older ones.
They do burn well though, I had my Wilesco roller fired on just the one Neither do they fit in burners that well, slide about too much in the older Mamod ones
Make the square again?

I have tried them and like you I dislike them, but I am lucky as only three of my engines run on solid fuel. I prefer to use meths over pellets. Mind you to get them to light easier I have put a dab of meths onto them.

Personally, like the two of you, I am not a fan of the current Mamod fuel tablets.
They are small, slide around in the tray and I think they should revert to square tablets.
I tend to use MSS tablets in my TE1A (if I have run out of meths) as they fill up the tray and are a really good fit!

I use them during most of my runnings the newer tablets and i dont mind them and i prefer them over the other solid fuel makes as they dont leave much mess only some soot
the main problem with them is that they stink awlfull and as mm said are very hard to light

They are less messy, that's true, but I get really crap runs out of them.
Although they are too powerful for the Wilesco D101, as the water level dropped much much quicker while the burner was still fully burning.

aye they dont last long enough cold water to boiler point tkaes up about half the tablet thats why i wack some fresh ones in the burner just when the water is starting to boil

Do they explode at least?
Not a proper solid fuel pellet if it doesn't explode...

No strangely enough they are more waxy so they probably repel the water and moisture better?
Unless anyone has had them explode?

If I'm using me TE1a outside I use three of these round tablets or meths (depends on my mood). Wait until the first two tablets have burned away a bit to create some extra space then bang another tablet in.
They do niff though. Meths has a much more pleasant aroma, especially for firing indoors where it is very possible to stink the whole ground floor out with solid fuel.

I hate them, I really miss the old square ones. BUT the mamod ones are better than the esbit tablets.

To light mine I put a drop of meths on a small square of paper kitchen towel and stick that to the tablet. You light the paper and that then lights the tablet, much easier.
But I have now made meths burners for the two engines that weren't meths to start with (SP5 + Jensen #60).

I won't use Esbit any more they stink and leave a real mess.
I used to prefer MSS tablets as they seemed like the old Mamod Brown Box tablets but they don't seem to burn away as well as the new Mamod ones. The MSS tablets leave a solid residue that has to be chipped out of the fuel tray almost as though the tablet has not fully burned.
So I now prefer the new mamod blocks as they seem the least messy and I can neatly fit 3 in a Wilesco burner slide

I've stared at my '75' too and thought that, funnel some of the hot gases and steam up there to add to the effect. And with whatever you did to the one at STIA you'll be able to send smoke signals with yours!

It's not too expensive to get a new one from Forest, especially with the exchange rate with America at the moment. For what you get it's by far the best value for money in the stationary world if you're looking to buy new.

Doesn't anyone ever fill up the boiler with hot water?
When I used to sail my steam boats, I would take a flask of hot water with me. It saved a fortune on gas, bringing the boiler up to pressure, it got up to full pressure in about quarter of the time.

Even when I am using my electrically heated engines, I bring the water to a boil in the Microwave and it saves a lot of time and energy. Meths fired engines run longer and are up to pressure much faster.
Oh yeah, get that 75 before the exchange rate reverses itself. Exchange rates change so very quickly, once you take it for granted, it can change.

Last time we fired up my SE2a (ie when it was still together!) Dave did use water from his kettle. I never thought to do that at home because I'm always banished to the garage
When I first "borrowed" the MM1 from my brother and attempted to find distilled water, I used the water from the condenser in my tumble dryer. In fact, it may have been my looking for somewhere to ask whether that was OK that led to me finding this forum...
