I am glad to see one of these come from Goodwill. The Goodwill stores around here don't seem to come up with anything steam related.

Les,
I am guessing you will have that looking real sharp when you get done cleaning it up. Hope to see pictures.

This is coming from America, so it will be a while before it gets here, and all I need to do before then is source a chimney and a meths burner. Do you know if a Mamod one will fit?
johnreid
I do not own any fire heated Jensen, but can tell you that the Oscillators are fast runners. The smokestack is purely cosmetic and can be purchased from Jensen.
I believe that Forest Classics sells a Meths burner for Wilesco that works on the Jensen.
redryder
I don't know if a Mamod burner fits. It seems to me this was discussed in one of the threads recently. It might have been the sticky Jensen thread in the top of the ebay section of the forum.
Let me know if you have any trouble getting a chimney.

the forest classics meths burner "will fit wilesco" will work. I'm not sure how long it is. I think I used the smallest one in my model 85, which is the same boiler and firebox as the 60. The next size up may work too... I no longer have an 85 to try it with (got one coming in a week or so though...)
About all you have to do is knock down the front tray support a bit (pressed metal flange that comes up from the base, just like on a mamod) so the burner can fit through the door.
Now, just so I'm not going off topic here, I'm just going to say that I've got nothing that I wish to enter this month. Shot my bolt last month.
johnreid
You can re enter it Mark. Or are you afraid that a certain BIG Jensen might be too much? Well maybe it would But that is beside the point.
I wonder if Forest Classics has any Spares like the chimney?
Mister Occlusion
I don't want to water down the contest.
Plus, I realized, that I cannot put the effort into the Making It Shiny, like some here can do so well. Final finish just isn't something that I am interested in for something that gets covered in muck for a living.
Would be like James simonizing his muck spreader every weekend
Ach, I always leave the chimneys off anyway, since they just fall off anyway. My D22 has a hole punched through the base of the chimney and support that one can thread a bit of paperclip through to hold it on when it runs.
I'll think about it, though. I just replaced the boiler/firebox on my Special 70, so it no longer looks like a reject from the 40's. And it's still shiny since I've not fired it yet

Mark, a dab of superglue on the chimney stub and inside the chimney itself works wonders. Clean first, smear both, hold chimney fast and in the proper orientation...about 30 seconds later you have a semi-permanent bond. It can be removed by grasping firmly and rocking...but I have never had one fall off or vibrate off after such treatment. I do it to every engine I own.
Mister Occlusion
I remember your mentioning it, Rog. Unfortunately I have to remove the chimney for the thing to fit into its box that I sadly must store it in because of my lack of viable horizontal space.
...I'm running out of vertical space too, which is frightening to contemplate (so I don't).
The old punched stubs and the straight drawn chimneys are certainly more secure than the pressed nubs and tapered rolled chimneys. Such is progress.
So, are we going to see a battle of the 51's this month? By my reckoning there are 3 of them on the forum now.
johnreid
Wouldnt it be so cool if three 51s were pulled from the cap at the same month?
A bit of Teflon Tape can do the trick too any thing that makes the chimney stick on a little firmer. Or as I often do, remove the chimney before firing.
redryder
No that would not be cool as 3 of them would not bring enough votes for 1 of them to win out out over anything nice but non Jensen.
Gil
johnreid
how about 3 51s and two 25s?
tmuir
Yes don't fall in that trap again and spread all your Jensen votes too thin.
Hmm, maybe its time to use my wild card...................
johnreid
All kidding aside, it is all in fun. I do want to see a Jensen as EOM, but I am having too much fun kidding about it. Plus, a SE4? Come on that is the Mamod big gun, on a Mamod forum. We had no chance.
redryder
Oh..... we had a chance right up until we loaded the deck.
Gil
IndianaRog
I gotta agree with Gil...too many Jensens of ANY type only dilute the chances for any one of them to win.
MM won fair and square with his gorgeous SE4 for this month, but the Jensens couldn't reach critical mass with each getting some votes but none getting enough.
We just need to sprinkle the Jensens in over the next 11 months

When he pans the camera off to show the watching sheep / pony, that's when he substitutes the slips of the ones he wants to win.

I never realized how big they were until someone told me the sight glasses are the same size as all the other Jensen ones that only have one on the front of their boiler. And look how small the whistle looks.

I have built Model Railroad layouts on the same amount of square footage that a 51 takes up.
Roger started his up, dimmed the lights a bit and ran his for me, I just sat there with my mouth open, truly something to behold.

A question to the #50/51 owners, if you were to put your finger on the flywheel whilst running at full power, would it stall? Or just grab your finger

| Griffin wrote: | A question to the #50/51 owners, if you were to put your finger on the flywheel whilst running at full power, would it stall? Or just grab your finger |
You can stall it quite easily without getting hurt. Remember these run on 5-25 psi. The steam ports are quite small by design. You just wouldn't want to stop it by shoving your finger into the spokes as there is enought in rotating mass there to give you a good twist and bruise.
