Marklin 16051

Marklin 16051 reproduction of the 4158 compound engine from the 1930's

With many, many thanks to Gil who allowed me to persuade him to sell his to Andrew and I.

The engine arrived yesterday.  Andrew and I were astonished to see it in real life.  It's much bigger than we thought and the pictures do not do it justice. It's totally gorgeous.

Of course, Andrew wanted to fire it right away.   I persuaded him we should enjoy it in it's current mint condition for a while.  Val thinks that should be forever.

I'm guessing Sunday.

Here are the pics:

General view with box. The new crown jewel of our collection.

With TE1 for scale.

With backdrop.

Side engine detail.

Rear engine detail

Safety Valve.

Displacement lubricators.

Pressure Gauge, Whistle, Boiler Drain (left).  On the right is the valve that allows a small pump to refill the boiler from an external source on the fly.
steamyjim

That realy is beuatiful!!!!!!

I WANT I WANT I WANT I WANT I WANT I WANT I WANT
steamyjim

Is it a true compund in the fact that the 2 cylinders are different sizes or is it just a cover?
tmuir

Thats actually green with envy.

That is one lovely engine and it must be steamed.
I'm not a MIB person.
Griffin

Wow, that is nice.  Still carn't get over how big it is

If that were mine, I honestly don't know if I could bring myself to fire that one, but I will look forward to the video if you do decide too
johnreid

Excuse me, there is drool on my keyboard

That is one fantastic thing to behold, and a good recreation of how it used to be done. Things like that are to be meticulously cared for, but to never run it would be such a waste, just keep it clean and avoid any abuse although I bet it would take abuse in stride.

Truly a thing of beauty.
Nick

WOW!
Les Marsh

Very impressive, a lot larger than I had imagined and I cannot wait to see it in steam. Thumbs up!
IndianaRog

Richard you MUST keep that baby MIB (at least until Sunday )...yup, unless you want to dust it only for perpetuity, fire that baby up and enjoy a true Nuremburg classic about 90 years after the fact!
James

WOW
kusuchi

If you can't wait til Sunday.

Get out your STIA 08 DVD.  At 13.10 into the shoot Sandy has some short footage of one in action.

I know I've been watching it all morning.
Nick

I love the finish on the boiler, and of course the striping on the flywheel.

What does the burner look like?
Sandman

That is just awesome.

I'm stuck for words.
James

Let me help you Sandy.

"Richard, I'd love to buy that engine off you and give it to our Jimbo free of charge"

There you go
Mamodman123

Wow thats a beast!

I have a headache just thinking about how that works
kusuchi

Nick wrote:

Burner and drain trays.

It holds 90 milliliters of denatured alcohol.  Each burner has a small pilot light next to it which is lit prior to insertion in the firebox.  This then ignites the main burners. There is a vent pipe and filler cap at one end.

I plan to use it to run the vintage Nurnburg accessories such as the Mohr & Krauss Toy Carousel Manxman sent us.  Hence my comment to you the other day about looking for accessories.

Waiting for my Accountant to tell me how much I owe the IRS before I commit to any more major purchases
Nick

Thanks!

Now that you have the burner ready, fire it up.

Beats the 5 bullet points from a mamod

Certainly is a monster Richard!

I'd be curious to see it in steam
oldstuff

Congrats, Richard! I don't think anyone else here has one, last I looked.

The one in the STIA DVD belongs to Colin Sowman.  I don't know if he's a forum member.  I believe Steamman also has one.

I was making a list

Here's a link for more info on the Engine:

I don't know who this guy is but he has an incredible collection.  This is just the Marklin page.

Congrats Richard !!!!!  It's a STUNNER !!!!!
It must be the magic of the Carribean sun and surf as it did not seem like it looked that good here.
It sure has found a great new home. We do have a brand new member that just got one and needs a little help with directions:

How about submitting it for Engine of the Month ? ??
Steve_S

It's a beautiful engine, and HUGE! I'm certainly looking forward to the video.

You and Andrew would get along great.

He has no time for engines that can't be steamed.  He does not understand the word collectible when it comes to engines.   Pressure is starting to build, I would think we'll have a good head of steam before too long.

The only reason the TE1 remains unfired is that he is content to run the very similar TE1A.

He's also now really into denatured alcohol burners.  Anyone know where we can get a replacement for the TE1A burner which has long since lost it's grille and wadding.?

Which picture would you choose?  If you don't like any of those posted I have about 50 more.

You could always buy a second mint Marklin 16051, and then you could steam one up without a worry then.

This one:

I just keep looking at that thing, I could see how one could go some time without firing it, just because they were spending too much time looking at and admiring it.

You're right John,

It's Tax time and I'm supposed to be focusing on my Accountant.  But I cannot tell you how many times I've taken time out to spin the flywheels on that engine.  Tomorrow I might hook it up to the compressor.

Good idea Les, why didn't I think of that.
IndianaRog

Richard, not sure exactly what your meths burner looks like for the TE1a, but I just repacked one of the older brass types for my SE3 and they are similar idea...load of cotton packed in tight with fine wire mesh holding the works in.

I used cotton parts of a 100% cotton mop head replacement, just folded them about 3 times and packed as many in as could fit without bulging the sides.  I had the original mesh, but I understand stainless steel termite mesh also works well.  Not sure if you can get such a thing where you are, but that seems to be the choice stuff.

cheers,
Rog
redryder

It will run on compressed air. It will run better on live steam especially after it gets good and hot and even better on live steam working a load. It is a compound engine. One of the best ways to smooth out a compound on air is to have a vaccuum pulling air out the exhaust, thus reducing the atmoshere for the low pressure cylinder and somewhat simulating a proper second expansion. I even did this with my 400 pound Elliott Bay Triple using a shop vac on the exhaust.

Thanks Rog I'll check it out.

Examine this, it is one that I got with a SR1A that had been converted to Esbit by the Seller, aside from that one Esbit firing the Roller was UNUSED! A perfectly good burner was mucked up so the guy could say it runs on an Ebay Auction.
The fix, I cut a strip of flannel from an old shirt and rolled it tightly, I then inserted that into the burner and topped it off with a piece of Stainless screen that I cut out of a strainer tha tI bought at the Dollar store. It worked great, a quick and easy fix for a worn Meths burner for your TE.

Mark, Mr O, now has it and I am sure it works well for him too.

A few more pics to add to the thread:

Another backdrop view.

Another boiler view. Note refill pump to right of boiler.  This pump cannot be shut off, it can just be eliminated from the cycle.

General Overview.

Side engine view.

Boiler view.

The problem is that once you have it running on the compressor, you will then want to see it run on steam.
steamyman

what a wonderful piece!
Wallace

Richard and Andrew, that is a great buy

That engine is a thing of absolute beauty. Just breathtaking.
Ever since I saw one on the net, that engine has stuck in my mind.

Well done on the buy, I love it  Train
IndianaRog

Richard, I already commented on this lovely engine...but that picture of it with the ocean as a backdrop was really superb...almost looked in the scale of a real full size engine done that way!!
Nick

Are you going to mount it on that base you have it set on?

I hope you do.
kusuchi

Nick wrote:

Could do. It's granite, so it's very heavy.  Would stop the engine sliding while under steam.

I was going to use part of it for bases for the Lilliput and Jenny Wren, but there seems to be plenty of it.

Thanks John,

That is identical to my situation with the TE1 burner.

Thanks Les,

Anyone else have an opinion?
steamman

Great to see another Marklin 16051   . Mine has plenty of power to drive my Wilesco workshop( 0ver 18 machines) The feedpump also works well and a well turned engine will run for about 25 minutes on one filling.
steamman

Here's mine

steamgranny

Richard ‘s threads are becoming like Gil’s & I’ve run out of superlatives to comment!
Everything just looks 100% better sitting on that handrail, too!
My photo choice:

Nick

I agree, the last photo looks best.
johnreid

I think this view of the engine is best.
kusuchi

I'm torn between the two.

I like the Caribbean background.

The dramatic effect of the picture Steamgranny and Les chose is undeniable.  As Rog said, it's almost like the real thing.

But it doesn't show much engine detail.

John's pick has the background with more engine detail, but isn't as dramatic.

Gil's pick is totally purist, maximum engine detail, burner, drain trays, etc.

H'mmmm
Nick

Take 5 really good pictures and start a new thread with a poll.
johnreid

Rotate the engine 5 degrees clockwise and watch the background in the viewfinder, the great thing about digital is that film costs nothing. Another excuse to take more pictures of it
kusuchi

Nick wrote:

You think the Caribbean background is essential?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the first one was also your pick.

I'm inclined to go with that first one, it may not show enough engine, but it really is a great picture.

That's the best thing about digital photography.  If you have a good camera and take enough pictures, one of them is going to look great.
Nick

You think the Caribbean background is essential?

No, but it does put a nice, personal touch on it.
redryder

I would like to see the sea in the background with the engine at a 30-45 dgree angle with the cylinder closest to the lense.
johnreid

I think the Caribbean backdrop gives it your signature touch
Les Marsh

johnreid wrote:

I agree, it has to have the sea as a background as I think it shows off the engine better and as Gil wrote:-

'I would like to see the sea in the background with the engine at a 30-45 degree angle with the cylinder closest to the lense.'

The only obsticle I can envisage to you winning EOTM is James not picking it out of his flatcap.
Nick

Yes, the cylinder needs to be in the picture.

Just enter it 10 times and it should be picked out of the cap.

SO you think it would beat, the "THING"?   Even beat the boxed "Thing"?
Les Marsh

Hands down, of course it might.

... gosh, they sure knew how to build engines in Göppingen!

I'll get out the Camera, seems to be a nice sunny day.

Better take advantage while it lasts.
