Marklin 6 Stationary...

A absolutely typical newbie mistake on my part....An impulse buy  from an ebay seller that was close by--Yahoo - no shipping- and I should have waited to see what I really wanted . I am enlisted in the navy and marine engines is where most of my interest lies !!

I bought this about the second or third day I was smitten by the steam -bug..

but for now I am going to liquidate - or at least try to- this impulse buy...

Here are the defects:

Missing original smokestack, meths burner, gauge and top to the whistle and the SV weight. All the red handles are plastic - not the original wood.

Here's whats right:

The base and fire box are in great shape.  No dents or tweaks. There is some imperfection under the paint on the base just near the fire door. About 2cm across- you can see this in the close up of the door. But all is intact.
Inside the fire box is very clean- and it does not look recently scrubbed??? It was not used a lot by my untrained eye and IMHO and was at least not abused- just the small parts misplaced.  The engine is in good shape and runs fine. I have run it on air. I have not fired it by heat since I had no proper burner. The boiler is dent free- the site glass is good. There is a solid brass "replacement "smoke stack in place.

I am not going to get what I paid for this back- but please someone help me free up some "Marine funds"

If I am going to give someone a good deal - it should be a member..

I will ship free in the US..I will pay half of s/h to UK. I would like to get $150 .....
mogogear

FYI- I threw the Marklin to ebay tonight- no reserve -I hope it gets a good  home.
Nick

Do you have a link? I may bid.
Nick

Found it:

I bid, but I will bet that I do not win that one. A Wilesco chimney would dress that one up nicely. I bet it goes over $100 for sure.

You cannot resist can you John.

Hopefully, because I think mogo said he paid too much for it.
johnreid

LOL it is a nice engine, put a cheap bid in just in case no one else does

The name Marklin should do you well, aside from the chimney it is in real good shape. I bet you do well.
Nick

What kind of chimney is on it? Flipped over, it would look kind of nice on there.
johnreid

The doors are complete and not all of them came with the Dynamo. I think the chimney is home made. That one is worth more than 100 for spare parts.
Nick

There are 5 openings in the top of the boiler, what is the center one that looks like a screw?

That could be in place of a filler plug.
Nick

Re: Marklin 6 Stationary...

I love the striping, like on the flywheel.

Thanks, and I will be watching ebay.
johnreid

IF you want it, remember to bid
My bid is low, but symbolic. Moral support.
Nick

There's just something about this one that I really like.

I should be home at the end time too.
mogogear

Thanks Guys - ---- and for forum members - I can help with the shipping _ OK?
johnreid

Does it brew a mean cup of Coffee?

Note to Mo, auctions that end on Sunday evening usually bring more money.
mogogear

Ahhh - well , my ebay  buyer knowledge knows that- I had time last night and got into a flurry... What will be, will be.

Sometimes I hunt and search too hard for things - I goof up- and on this one I just need to let it go....

Your point is spot on though..
johnreid

I was just trying to help, it can get so tricky.
I honestly think I won an Auction yesterday for $25.95 that if it had ended on a Sunday would have been over $100
It is a good thing to help each other out.
mogogear

I absolutely appreciate it!! I am among good folk....

I totally agree.
evramsing

Is this thing still for sale?  You've got my email address, please let me know?

Thanks
johnreid

It wouldnt bother the current high bidder if you bought it outright, save Mo the final value fees.
n***n said that
Les Marsh

I see n***n is in the bidding again.
johnreid

I cant afford to bid, but if I won at that price, I would find a way to pay, or in fact if Mo didnt want to part with it for that low price I would let him keep it. I only bid $50
evramsing

n**n has one of those STUPID automatic bid things.  Fine, it's yours, enjoy.
johnreid

I hope Mo gets more than what I bid, that is too nice an engine to only go for $50 that low of a bid is for moral support, it is just so suspenseful to watch one sit with no bids for several days.  I think Mo is away from the Internet for a few days maybe he can work something out with you once he gets back online.

I think that if you bid over the $50, you have a good chance of being the highest bidder.

Which I am reliably informed that he will not.
johnreid

Someone just bid $50, it will take $51 to beat my $50 bid.
evramsing

Fine, just fine.  Okay, so maybe I should up my meds.  I'm sounding like some cantankerous old nutcase.  And I'll up my bid...
johnreid

Best of luck I think it wouldnt take long for shipping if you win it.
Nick

Mogo, you can't sell it early, there are people like me who will wait until there is less than 10 seconds left and bid. I know it will bring more than what it is looking like.
Les Marsh

ncseverson wrote:

Do you want it Nick
johnreid

It is a tough choice to make, does one bid early or does one wait till the last 10 seconds and snipe it. It ends on a weekday so it might go lower, but there again the name Marklin surly has shown up on several collectors saved searches. So, the weekday vs weekend probably wont affect it more than 10%
Some pieces it isnt a bad idea to bid the lower high bid you are wanting to pay. Say you thought an item was worth between $25 and $35, put the $25 bid in and come back at the end in case you need to go to $35, if it is $40 already you were not going to win it anyhow. The $25 might scare off some some of those bidiots though.
I am broke, so no more bidding for me.

Maybe.

Isn't ebay a wonderful thing?  I just love the automatic bidding.  And it's so nice to see total confidentiallity amoung the bidders.  I'm curious, what's to prevent a seller from artificially boosting his own bid?  I've given up on this one, I have just don't like wasting my time.  If I knew what the other bidders maximum is, I would feel better about making a commitment.

Surely you bid to your maximum, and either you win or you don't.
But it does not pay to bid too early as you only end up pushing the price higher.
mogogear

It is my machine- for a short while more- but to answer evramsing observation of why everyone just doesn't all-in at the first of a auction is probably why live auctions are not held the same way-

The whole process of auctioning is not "practical" in its application. It is an  induced competition. The auctioneers are hired by the reputation of who can get the best results and bidders bid on many different levels... who it is or who it is "not"( why ebay has tried the fake i.d's) raw competitive spirit... perhaps precieved "need".... the emotion of the experience... my heart surely races when I throw in my last second bid - thats for sure!!

I just hope to get it to a new owner that will have fun with it and try to salvage my purchase price......either way for me it is Adios' Marklin- Hello Bowman...
H2o vapour

Cheap /expensive,

By the time you have liquidated your asset, it will be the cheapest engine ever purchased and the best profit made.

Point is we all have to start somewhere and you cannot go to a store and buy experiance.  People don't even buy an engine that has a re- sale value let alone one that runs and will sell!!

well done!!

keep up the good work & don't worry to much about any loss. I bet any loss is less than a couple of good bottles of wine, and we all know what we do with that and how much value that gives

H20
johnreid

The Bowman came at a very reasonable price, whatever you get from this you will be coming out ahead. I only wish I had the finances to buy one like that, but there are those who do and I sincerely hope you do quire well.
mogogear

All is good in Oregon- I have acquired all of you "guardian-knowledgeable angels"  just for the price of signing up here and participating ---

I have the bargain of a life time..
Nick

You only wanted $150 on here, and with 45 minutes left, it is already up to $125. I hope it goes high!
Nick

Dang! no one else bid. I was hoping for this one to go high.
mogogear

Ah all is fair!! Thankd for your "hopes" I am on the road and watched it from my hotel room.... A French buyer got it.... on to a new home in France!!

Saiz la vie! ( my french sucks - so I hope I got close )
johnreid

I thought it would have brought more too, que sara sara
You sure have a real nice Bowman coming, I think alls well that ends well, we cant win them all but if you end up ahead in the big picture, you are a winner.
