It's often dark by the time I get to play with my engines, so I use my much loved Coleman Northstar petrol lamp. This little MH&B twin cylinder marine engine is 9mm bore, 9mm stroke, double acting, slide valve. The valve chest is at the side of the cylinders, and the valves are driven from a separate shaft parallel to the crankshaft and driven from it by a pair of gears. The valve shaft is fitted with slip eccentrics operated by a lever on the crankshaft engaging a neoprene ring on the valve shaft. In the video I've tried to show the forward/reverse mechanism, and I move the throttle lever forward to vent the valve chest via the exhaust to remove boiler pressure from the slide valves, allowing the eccentrics to turn more easily.
