Marvin with new pistons

I upgraded Marvin with Ip piston up grade kit
here he is running on blocks
bessytractor

running well!!!
MooseMan

Looks really controllable, and sounds like plenty of torque going on....I'm warming to Mamod locos!

Nice...do they come gauged for LGB track?  I have a 1500mm radius loop of track that came with an electric Stainz 0-4-0 and a couple of coaches.
CCairns

do they come gauged for LGB track Most of the Mamod locos were produced for 32mm (Guage O) track, although the SL1K kit loco had both 32mm & 45mm (Gauge 1) wheels, some SL3s were produced with 45mm wheels, and others have been converted. A limited batch of the new Mamod William was also produced in 45mm gauge

Mamod did a conversion kit which just consisted of a set of 45mm gauge wheels with spacers to use the standard chassis, and extra gaskets to move the cylinders out from the chassis to line up with the pins on the regauged wheels.

You can still get the Mamod re-gauge kits, and MSS also do 45mm wheels as well. 3rd party Replacement wheels are also available in 45mm gauge.

LGB track is well suited to the Mamod 45mm locos as the curves are not as tight as the Mamod O Gauge track.

Chris thanks for answering the LGB question

Moosey this one has had all the mods mate uprated SV, Steam contol valve, topup valve and now Oringed pistons

will put it on the track sometime over the weekend

Keep running it in and it will fly

MAkes a nice noise Graham!

MM there is a little story with this loco. when I first added the pistons and ran it in a bit it ran great but didnt have the chuff sound like the sl1k i added the pistons to. so I pulled it down to investigate and found that the exhaust was crimped over at the end and a smal cut was made just under the crimp. I made a new pipe with the end open. It made a nice chuff chuff but ran like a wounded snail. so back to the drawing board. I pulled it apart again and reduced the outlet size of the pipe to about 1/16th inch or bit less and also fited a peice of 1/8" ID bras tube to the end of it so that it came up into the smoke stack.
and the movie is the test run after. so my conclusion is it needs some back pressure to run beter.

Runs well GJ Although I have still had nothing back from IP about the faulty gland nut. I suspect I will call them on Monday to get to the bottom of the problem
shaygetz

Thank you for the information, Chris.  Guess I'll be keeping my eyes open for one, reworked or otherwise.

Not suprised

Use PPS

shaygetz Mamod locos appear quite often on ebay USA, although not always 45mm versions. Chasteam does the Gauge 1 conversion kit for £12 - see item 219 on here http://www.chasteam.com/locomotivespareparts.htm

However his postage rates overseas are very high. Should you need one of these conversion kits I'd be happy to buy it for you and post it on at cost.

You also see the Gauge 1 wheels on ebay UK sometimes. I have an SL1K which awaits its turn in the workshop, and needs a few bits to complete but it has both sets of wheels. Once I get it finished it could be for sale, but as I've said there are other locos ahead of it in the workshop queue.
Spule 4

PPS have the wheels too, nicer than the standard Mamod ones.

I like my set.
bessytractor

my one has those cylinders, unfortunately the first pair were so hopelessly made they had to be sent back and replaced.

here is another video I took this afternoon
steamyman

wonderful to see!   Marvin at his best.
Graham-Jilly

cheers Clinton

At least it is now running again Graham.

Your video proves the point that a Garden Railway needs to be totally flat to run these Mamod/MSS locos at their best. You obviously have 2 mountains in that loop as Marvin slows down in the same positions each time.

Thanks for sharing this video with us.

I wish Winter would end soon so that I can make a start on my Garden Railway - we had a snow covering last night, which has gone away today, but it is still too cold and wet for any concreting.
Graham-Jilly

Chris it was on the news tonight here that a lot of the north of the uk had heavy snow storms hope your ok up the in the lowlands of scotland

yes there is a bit of a rise there but he seems to get over it ok i think the boiler needs more heat to keep the steam up and then i recon it would fly over that hill
CCairns

Yes weather is better here today. Just hope it is going to hold for tomorrow as I intend leaving very early in the morning to make STIA2008 by the opening time of 13:00. No problem on the way back as I've got a cheap room for Sunday night in Leicester.

Hopefully with more running Marvin will get smoother and then these 'mountains' will become less of a challenge.

I'm going to try and see how many wagons the IP Jane will pull now that it is running better - I've got 8 to bet so far!
