Maxitrak TEs?Does anybody have any info on Maxitrak traction engines?
I am looking at getting one in kit form, 12 stages, at £206 a time.

I've been after a ride on TE for ages, but every one is like £3000+
so at £200 a time, I can't afford it, but it is more affordable.

Suppose...

Chris

As in 12 x 206 = £2472?
Bit more than a TE1 that. Hope they are good!
There are some nice looking locos on the site.

You could buy 50 TE1s of ebay, chain them all together and get them to pull you around for the same money.

That ain't one, looks like a Markie missing a load of bits.
I got a choice.
Carry on buying Mamods, Wilescos, and Jensens. Buy a Mamod loco and mod it up.
OR
Buy a Maxitrak TE

it will take you about 12 years to build the damn thing
Anywya thought Wilescos could pull people?
|
James

LMAO!
I workeed out if you linked 12 together they could
|
Chris
|
Ok, I will try and make a more serious comment than buying 50 Mamods (although I think it does put the price into perspective).
Wait.
Get a job.
Buy one in a couple of years if you still want it.
In the mean time look out on ebay, look out at shows, you might see a bargain.
Oh, and as someone who has owned a couple of fords, don't buy one of those either!

heres a 1 inch scale minnie done up to be a steam roller
you might need to fit rubbers on it to give more traction...
it has been done on steam rollers they put a thin section of rubber that steel keeps the rough shape of the wheel thin

James if you want an exspensive toy then buy it, if you want a TE you can ride behind then do not buy it! Sure you can see in the vid one pulling someone but watch it is only just and you need a very flat surface. If you want a TE to ride behind I'd say you need a 1.5" model at least and this will need good flat ground. Save up your money James and get a proper model to ride.

Maxitrak I have found are very good with contact/reply James, DON'T get the puny Maxitrak ones. Someone brought one to the Miniature Show at Amberley last year, during the gran parade, it was running around 'the islan' and ran out of steam half way, and it was barely moving. He caused about 1/2 hour delay so the show didn't go so well Plus Maxitrak's don't look 'right' IMHO You'd be better off getting a 4 inch Burrell or 4 1/2 inch Foden from ModelWorks Int. Although Modelworks are renowned for late kits and parts not fitting, or missing

James

The front wheels look too small and the boiler too deep.

Three words: Don't get one
You would be better off saving your pennies and getting a 4 inch Foster etc. (the ideal size for serious work!).

So you did go for the kit one rather than already built.
Good choice will save you some cash and once it is built you will fully understand how it all works.
Make sure to take plenty of pictures during construction

One thing about Mercer kits of course is that the valve timing is quite tricky to do. Patience is the key to that one
|
steamyjim
|
when we first built mine (was to young to build it myself being about 6!!) we assembled it and it woulnt run (of course the valve timing was out) then we adjusted the eccentric by a very small amount and it burst into life... A VERY HAPPY MOMENT!!!!!

Did not have any trouble with setting up maybe I was lucky, I did find the setting instructions I got from Geoff Winwood to be very good, however I would suggest that until you know the setting are OK run it up on air.
