ME3 marine engineHere is the ME3 marine engine that I got from Mike Nicholas' ebay auction & its in pretty good condition. With it are the new cowl and a propeller & shaft.
Not much to really restore as the cowl fits like a glove but the holes in the base do not co-incide with the ones in the cowl so will have to redrill the base. This model was designed to run an SEL unit but the propeller fits in the shaft on the pully spot on (or should that be spot in, ) . I will provide a chock to angle it to the same angle as the ME1 and get a stern tube to go over the propeller shaft
I intend to run it in an appropriate boat, but not a modern one like the Maine lobster boat that is on OZ ebay at the moment,
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Maine-Lobs...PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Any one got any ideas as to what would be suitable in a kit form (to minimise postage) and at a reasonable price, I think Spokesman was working on one that could be good.
Also as this engine was made from 1965 to 1972 is there any way of telling this one's vintage as I would like to put the correct decal on the cowl. The one in the bible is shown with a 1954-65 rectangular decal but the decals changed some time after that to the ones with the curved bottom corners like the one I have on my ME1
Cheers

Thanks to you Tony . It was the last one they had, if they'd had any more I would have bought them as they were dirt cheap, about $11.00 plus P & P. They've still got 7-8 propellers & shafts if your interested.
cheers

Chris, check Mooseman's site, he put a similar unit with SEL motor into a Hobbies boat kit modeled after Bowman type pond boats of the 20's...turned out quite nice.

Good looking engine! That was stroke of luck with the cowl... it'll be great to see it running in a boat.

Finally all has been revealed Chris it's excellent! and a great bit of fortune with the cowl.
Mike was building a Hobbies Arrow boat, which he ordered from their website I believe .
For the decal you just need the rectangular one. I've seen a couple of these with that decal so it should be ok

Thanks for the info everyone. I check out the the Hobbies site for the boats that MM & Rog suggested. In the meantime I'll finish puting it together and see if I can run it a few times to try & dull down the cowl a bit.

I checked out the Hobbies Arrow and it's a bit to racey for what I'm thinking of. Has anyone tried the Arrows Mabel as it looks a bit more like the period I'm thinking of.

Well finally got a chance to finish the ME3, not that it needed doing much to it.
I'll have to put a wedge under the base to bring it to the same angle as the ME1 and also get a brass stern tube for it.
Now I've got to find a suitable boat to put it into. I've done some investigation and like the Hobbies Arrow that some members are building but would rather try & find something with a more colonial feel to it, like the Wilesco African Queen but need to find something suitable for a horizontal engine.

Chris, it looks like the day it was made, gorgeous. You will find that SEL engine used by Mamod is a real workhorse. Mooseman put one in his Arrow boat build project and it does a yeomans job.
Looking forward to the boat to hold it!
cheers,
Roger

I don't like your chances of getting a new cowl, unlees a Mamod retailer might have one as they have been discontinued for more than 35 years. I managed to get the last one from the OZ importers as they were the importers when the Malins family owned the business. As for the propeller shaft & propeller, they still had eightin stock when i bought mine and theyt're not likely to have much call for them. I can give you the address etc in OZ if you like.

Fallen down a sewer and come up smelling of roses you are that lucky

I wouldn't suggest you replace the rivets with bolts unless they are loose as you will be altering a very rare engine as the rivets holding the engine frame to the base is they way they came, but it's up to you as it's your engine. The OZ agents don't have the propeller saft with the hole in it for the pin - I suspect that the ones they've got are really for the ME1 & you'll also have to angle the whole engine on a block of hard wood so that the propeller 7 shaft will work properly.
The agents details are as follows,
A Scott & Co (wholesalers) P.L.
15 Creswell Street
Newstead Brisbane 4006
Queensland
Australia.
The part reference number is - MMS-085 (propeller 30mm & shaft 175mm
Please not that this doesn't include the stern tube that the shaft fits into & theyt don't have this.
Cheers

tinkttt, if you are having trouble finding a cowl, try a car smash repair place, or moreso a place that specialises in restoring cars. They may be able to chrome it for you, and it should be quite cheap

That's correct, the bloke who looks after Mamod spares at the wholesaler has been doing that job for donkey's years and he said that they'd had the cowl sitting there for a long time - years. He said they'd mistakenly ordered it instead of TEA cowls and it wasn't worth sending them back due to freight costs. Don't know how your local dealer ended up with one possibly the same way, .
I also asked about old burners etc & he just laughed & said I wasn't the first to ask.
Cheers
