A couple more pictures would be useful but if it does not go abover £200 I think that would be worth a punt, unless the flywheel is damaged or the piston is missimg... A burner would not be hard to sort out and the gears are not a problem. Just on the face of it it looks like it needs about £100 thrown at it...

Is that de-zinc on the boiler or just scale?

I might be able to take a closer look in a few days time - er allegedly
Oh what the heck - it's coming here. Worst case, if the boiler is badly shot then we can use the boiler of another incomplete one I have to fix this one.
I know I had said I'd stop buying them but my birthday is coming up and my parents were asking what I wanted.

Ok - collected it from Post Office this morning. Complete apart from Burner - which we all knew from the pictures. Bear in mind I've only spent a few minutes on it. Obviously no spanner/funnel etc.
Both gears present, flywheel present and looks to be pretty good.
Needs some cleaning as it looks like it has been somewhere that it has got damp and rusted etc, also dripped on hence scale/discolouration on outer boiler wrapper.
When it arrived it wouldn't turn over - was stiff although that pulley with tyre was fouling things. Removed and refixed flywheel correctly, given it a quick dose of oil and it turns over fairly freely.
Piston appears to be tight in cylinder and I suspect the inner boiler is probably ok.
At the moment neither the safety valve nor the water filler cock will easily detach from boiler so they need looking at. Also the screw in the water cock is stuck in position. As a result of that I've not been able to try it on the compressor at all.
Base is a bit tatty - see rust etc above.
So when I get chance to talk to Stan then we sort out which one we cannibalise to fix the other incomplete ones. If this boiler is ok and everything cleans up ok then I guess we take the burner from one of the others to complete this one.

Further update
Screw inside water overflow fitting still doesn't want to budge - however entire fitting now removed from boiler. Haven't tried to remove safety valve but happy that will now lift freely.
So have had it running ok on compressor.
Have seen Stan's wife who says 'good luck on persuading him that not all of them can be fixed'.

Further update - water level fitting now completely apart. Safety valve removed from boiler.
Top of outer boiler now removed - on first look inner boiler seems to be in good condition.
Base may be in better condition than first thought - looks more like grime with some paint & the transfer underneath it.
So next up is to do some more tests on it but very probably try boiling water in it on Sunday as it appears to be generally ok. Also obviously give it a little bit of a careful clean.
So what was potentially a set of parts looks as though it lives again - we'll take the burner from one of the less complete ones and use the bits from that one to fix the other two.

That's good news Tony, Sounds like your gamble paid off.
So what are you going to do with all those steam engines? I though I was being excessive owning two 1929 engines plus a trio of the later ones...

Two are built on models at the moment - one on the Xmas Challange Steam Shovel and one on the Quayside Unloader (btw will you be at the HTMC on April 9th as will try and bring it down to that for last outing).
Another is put by to go on the Set 10 Railway Crane when that is finished and I have a cunning plan for Henley (if it works).
Longer term then excavators & cranes from that period used vertical boilers, some very large excavators used more than one or an even bigger unit horizontally across the back. Sadly the 1960s type of engines just don't look right - bring on the big Marklin 4099/02 at that point!
Believe me provided I can find the time to build things I have enough ideas in mind to keep them in use.

It never ceases to amaze me how many models people have made up. The whole point of Meccano is to build and rebuild using the same parts...
Having said that I think that Sue and I have more assembled models at the moment than we have ever had but it is the beginning of the show season...

No - the point is to build models until I run out of space or Marie really puts her foot down.
At the moment it is:-
Set 10 Models
Tornborg Folding Crane, Mack Wrecker, Quarry Shovel, Quayside Unloader & Railway Crane (still to finish)
Don't forget though some of these I hope to write up for Newsmag, Runneymede etc.
There are then four/five Highway/Superhighway models and one incomplete Combat Kit one to finish.
Odds & Ends - Chaos Engine, X Series Skier (plus Trix version), Xmas Challange Steam Shovel, RC Hummer, Cable Car.
Then there is the Marble Bouncer which is permanent else I'll get lynched by the local kids at a nearby show.
In terms of Marklin, large orange Artic Lorry, Snowball Thrower and Set 15 Gantry Crane (which is equivalent to between a set 9 and 10 in Meccano terms).
Some of those are due to come to bits soon I'll admit. However at the moment that still leaves me with plenty of bits of metal to play with

That confirms it - you are oficially a Meccano Nut
BTW I will be at HTMC meeting on the 9th (see here: http://www.my-meccano.co.uk/index.html ). would you like me to bring a drill?

There had been doubt in your minds previously?
No drills allowed - especially near the export set that is used to build the unloader. I've had it a year now but I'm still occasionally opening the box and sitting there in wonder that I managed to get hold of such a thing.
On the other hand I think you have a set of boxes from Reg that belong here - so it may be time for me to finally collect those.

I will bring the boxes...
... maybe just a small drill?

Perhaps I will bring the X-Series Skier to show you I am fully sorted for holes

Just realised I forgot the set 10 overtype semi-portable engine. How I can forget that when it is taking up much of the bench is beyond me.

Getting back to the original topic of discussion - the 1929 engine has just been in steam and running largely fine.
The only problem besides the missing burner is that the thumbscrew watercock drips. I've never seen that with one of those before but may explain the rust & junk in there.
Hopefully a good clean up of that will fix it.
