Meccano gears A and B are desireable but not too common, can be expensive.
The plasric type are relatively plentiful and cheaper - I have a mixture here . . .
There are more specialised gears such as helical and bevel gears too all in brass. Search on ebay in Meccano gears or Gears and sprockets.

Pick and choose what you want without having to wait for the exact things to come up on ebay.

I got this for my old man a while back

It's still showing up, but if for some reason it doesn't, it's the same as Mikes Gear Set, B for 11 pound

That set makes the clutch mate as well as diff and other stuff.
Well the gears of it anyway. Just need a few extra bits like a base and supports.

got any pics wal
thought you needed a dog cluch for it ?
|
Wallace
|
The all important bit is that axle you see in the box. To make a dog clutch I mean.
It's slotted and has a spring on it. I actually
Here is the dogclutch as made in the instructions. There was some modding to make it spin freely though.
I had to pack in some washers as when you engaged the gears with the lever, the lever pushed down too much causing friction.
With the washers packed in behind the gear on the right, the lever didn't have to push as far.
Picture your engine hooked up to the left side. Spinning free, then as you engage the gears it'll drive the right side
You nearly use all the parts in that gear set for a diff. I think Mike did one of those.

i like the cluch wallace i have all the base plates and things like that all i need is the special axel and the 2 gears and the brass collars
|
Wallace

Well you're halfway there then mate. Good stuff.
It really is handy, esp if you build a mobile, or use it for your workshop.
The only trick is getting it running freely. As I mentioned the washers helped, so did oil.
Cos when you push it across to engage tjhe gears there is some tension in the spring that the lever is fighting against too.
Good luck with it
Oh, and I don't think gears outfit A has the axle
Just looking at the booklet now. You can make a reversing gear, automatic reversing mechanism, dog clutch, 2 speed gearbox, steering mechanism, castor steering, diff, and some other things I don't understand
Of course you need some other basic bits of meccano for all those, but very handy in the basics of building a meccano car.

has the axel in the pic got a slot down it ?
|
Wallace
|
Yeah mate. Just have a look in the 2nd pic you will see it clearer.
Runs from the left, across to the arm touching the gear.
The idea is to allow the gear to slide along the axle, but not spin. So you do the grub screw up so it goes into the slot. Like a keyway.
But for the gear on the right, you do it up normally, as if it were a pully on a lineshaft, so the pulley can't slide sideways
Actually if you try the earlier mentioned seller (guy who I got Dad's from) or another is bitorpieces. He has a shop. Either one may sell the axle seperately

is it this?

That's them Lewis!
See the screws in those little collars? They go into the slot.
Those screws will probably be long and do up not allowing the collars to slide sideways.
If you add gears, and want them to slide sideways (the dog clutch needs one to slide sideways) you'll need the grubs screws with the gears.
Anyway, that's them mate

Before you buy them, worth doing a search on ebay for that name. Meccano keyway rods?
There'd be a part number, but I have no idea what
|
Lewis
|
cheers wal i will consider getting them sometime
|
Wallace

No worries mate. At least you have a name to them.
But very much worth paying that little extra for a gear set.
Lot of money for those 2 rods
Or get a meccano axle and dremel, and try the slot yourself
Need very steady hands

There are special Meccano screws to use with cog wheels on the keyway. They have spigots on the end that fit into the slot.

Very nice! I've got that set too, but not quite as old I think. It's got the yellow celluloid tray in the box... I assume that's later than the cardboard one. I got it for Christmas, probably around 1966 or thereabouts.

Thanks Mike, but I'm sure mine will turn up if I have a good rummage around.
