What I hate about any antique show except Antiques Roadshow is how everything doesn't go to specialist auction houses so those selling hardly get anything! One time there was a beautiful 2 1/2" gauge 'Flying Scotsman' on Cash in the Attic (I think...) and it didn't sell because someone in their infinite wisdom took everything to a furniture auction house. How stupid can these so called 'experts' be?!

I wish I had gone to that auction.
The few auctions houses I've gone to have only ever been filled with furniture, china, old mobile phones and 'ghetto blasters' from the 1980s.
I only know of one antique shop in Perth, Western Australia with a steam engine in it and they might aswell cement it to the floor as its a crappy fleischmann that's not worth more than $100 that they want $450 for it.

I have, toy steam engines are rare where I live so despite the fact that you can buy them from overseas and ship them here for 1/4 of the price antique shops still think they are worth that much and don't get me started on Mamods...
Its cheaper for me to buy a Mamod from a shop in the UK and pay for the freight to OZ than it is to buy directly from the main Mamod importer for Australia.
Hence why all us Ozzies buy are engines off ebay UK.

Definately right, the last place I would buy a steam engine from is an antique shop in OZ. As Tony say's the prices are usually 3-4 times dearer that you can buy on ebay - and this is for common engines.
