Meths burner arrived!

My meths burner arrived, along with safety valve etc from IP engineering.

The wick it came with looks like some sort of glassfibre. I did as the instructions stated and twisted three strands together, folded in half, shoved in holes and trimmed. Fitted the burner after filing off a few ends of bolts to make it fit. The front most burner is very very close to the front axle of the loco, so have to be careful it doesn't jam, think it is ok though.

Fitted spacer, safety valve, water top up thingy all ok.

Filled up with meths, hot water. Set fire to it (need to get a long lighter I think). Left it for a minute or so to build up steam. Luckily I wasn't leaning over it as the new safety valve went off with one heck of a pop!

Anyway, I've had a couple of runs with it. Goes great. No slowing down like it did with the solid fuel, much steadier speed around the corners. But the meths doesn't last very long (as in MMs post asking how to make them last longer). I can do two runs without filling up with water. So I am still only getting a few minutes (not timed it, but probably about 5-6 minutes as per MM's post. Might try covering one of the burners and use just two of them. Need to fiddle a bit I think. Surprising how little meths the tank holds though.

Glad it finnaly arrived Chris! I know the pain of waiting for locoparts . Yes it will give you a steadier run! Won't keep stopping either! The new safety valves go off well! So you actually know when it pops up instead of, hmmm is that just leaking or is it going off? .

2 wicks could work chris! I'd keep the back one and the front one for a bit of superheating The middle wick usually falls right under where the steam pipe comes from the boiler . 5-6 sounds about the norm for these burners unfortunately

When I fill up my meths burner I use a small funnel and a medicine cup.
I add 15mills which is about all I can put in without spilling any.
I'm usually too lazy to preheat my water so start it with room temperature water.

Once the valve is popping I usually get the loco to do one lap around the track and then add another 5 to 7 mills of meths and this is usually enough to get me very close to an empty boiler.

I do only run my loco outside and I wouldn't recommend topping up a lit meths burner inside just in case it goes run though.

Sounds much better Chris - look forward to the new video!

Uploading a video right now! Will post in the video section with my other SL1 video.

15mils? This seems to struggle to take 10

Sanded the end of a syringe a bit so it fits in the water filler. So with careful filling of meths burner using a small syringe the the ability to top up with water I thought I would be onto a good thing. Not as easy as it seems though fighting all the pressure in the boiler with a syringe! Possibly not the safest activity, but was running for about 25 minutes.

Had fire extinguisher at the ready!

Here is IPEngineering's website.

Ans here is PPS another good supplier of Mamod loco parts and upgrades
http://www.pps-steam-models.co.uk/

I personally bought all my parts from IPEngineering as they were a bit cheaper but I know a few people here havent been happy with IPEngineering's service.
To order from PPS you will have to ring them up and pay by credit card but they our quiet helpful.
Chris

Feed back was bad from IP. I ordered stuff online, never had any form of confirmation of my order and then just waited and waited. After a bit e-mailed them to see whether they had the order to be told they were waiting for supply of safety valves.

I am not impatient, and don't mind waiting, but how hard would it have been for them to at least confirm they had my order, and then say it would be a couple of weeks for the valves?

Just ordered some nameplates from PPS, ordered by phone, so I will see if I get better service there. Only disadvantage is that you need to phone them up to order.

Yes I agree completely.
PPS seems to give better service but is marginally more expensive and you have to phone them.
I've ordered twice from IPEngineering now and on my second order realised after you pay for the order they give you the confirmation number of your order and thats the only time you get it so I recommend taking a screen grab or printing out that page if you order from them as unlike most online order places they don't email you.

Don't use IP! They never ever contact you and are so so slow atposting!

Use PPS! Much much better!

I never had to phone PPS I emailed him and he replied instantly

People outside of UK have to pay by credit card MM so we have to phone.

Its worth the phone call! I wouldn't buy anything of IP!
