meths burner ideas (thinking outside the pot)

http://www.minibulldesign.com/fs2.htm

check out this $17 camp stove, with a mind to adapting it to your needs for steam?

-adjustable wick
-water jacketed (stays cool)

Q: who can adapt the design to become workable in their toy steam engine?

This stove is a complete paradigm shift for MBD. All alcohol stoves to this point have used a primer to heat the entire stove body and start the fuel boiling. I decided to make the Blackfly different. This stove is always cold and the only place alcohol is boiled is at the base of the wick and the small port area just below it. The advantage is you can control the burn better and you don't waste any fuel heating the body. I have added an easy to fill water jacket to keep the fuel cool during a long burn.

. In the few years that I've been visiting the minibull designs site, Tinny has introduced at least half a dozen innovations in alcohol stove designs. Hopefully we'll see this guy on 60 Minutes some day....

the wick is a fiberglass cord, and the water jacket keeps the stove body cooler, which stops burn marks (and risking fire) where you've been cooking.

I rather like that idea/principle, maybe, if it could be scaled down, it could work well with a vertical boiler, but I think the concentrated flame design might not work as well on a horizontal boiler,     .

The basical idea is interesting...but these burners (as they are now) would not be safe...
they have got a big whole in the middle, and above the flame...
Immagine you light it up and it falls off your desk

only problem with a conventional engine design is that the inside of the firebox gets very hot.  I think your water jacket would quickly itself boil.  Alcohol boils at a lower temp than water too.

Speculation is no substitute for experimentation, however.

I'm still moving in the direction of a Bowman style vap burner on a chicken feed system (with sump this time).  The thinner diameter tube stuffed with wicking material gives more of a just in time fuel delivery system rather than a traditional vap burner where it's all sitting in the firebox boiling away.

I just need the time to sit down and actually build it.

Starting to have too much on the go.  Much more, and nothing will get done

Agreed.

I am pretty sure I'll never employ a meths burner for that reason:
I don't trust myself yet, or ever, with spill-able fuel (that's just me).

Am most keen to try the gelled alcohol. It's such gentle stuff.
It's self-regulating in vaporization rate. I know I can control it
even in a hot firebox.

I should have my first and only toy engine in a week's time;
meanwhile, waiting, the days go by slowly

Cheers to you both,

Reid
