Meths Burner

Real basic question, I,m embarassed to ask. I want to fire my SW1 and I've never used a meths burner before.

Do I fill it with cotton wool and then soak in meths, or just fill it?
MTA

if it hasnt got cotton wool in it, put cotton wool in, then put meths in If it didnt have cotton wool an you put meths in, BOOM!
tmuir

I take it the meths burner youhave is the one with mesh across the top of it.
If it is all you do is carefully pour meths onto the mesh and it will soak into the wool below. Stop filling before meths comes above mesh.
Thats it. Light it put in place just dont knock it over as a burning meths spill is not good.
MTA

Sometimes you cant actaully see the flame when you put the match to it, I just put my hand over the burner (at a reasonable height of course) to feel if there is any heat coming off the burner
yosa

Thanks again guys.

Don't think it'd go boom.

It'd just burn for longer, and be easier to spill mate
yosa

After the MM1 I might just drink the meths instead.

It's a real shame mate

When I worked in the outback I heard meths with orange juice followed by a lick of Nugget black shoe polish was the trick.

No I didn't try it.

The shoe polish probably gave it a nice finish.

Meths in OZ has stuff to make you sick, the shoe polish is meant to neutralise it.
yosa

Good idea. don't know if they do that with ours, reckon they should though.

We have stuff over here to make us sick, it's called Fosters, and there's another one called Castlemaine XXXX.

Ever wonder why there is so much of that beer in the UK?
No one will drink it in OZ so they have to sell it somewhere.

I think the joke is that it's actually brewed here
yosa

Might clear the limescale out of a boiler, I'll try it this weekend.

What's the popular brew over there mate?

Depends on which state your in and there is lots of microbreweries making beer now but I guess the old faithfull 'Victoria Bitter' would be one of the most popular beers. Not as good as some of the microbreweries beer but heaps cheaper.

Sounds good to me mate. I've got a mate in the business and he reckons small breweries is the way forward. The trend is that the "local" is dying out and most people either go to town or have a few at home.
Wallace

Re the XXXX and Fosters beer, they are both terrible.
Tmuir may be able to help me out, but I'm pretty sure Fosters isn't Aussie anymore.
Tooheys New is my pic. I like that one

But I don't drink anywhere near the amount I used to.
ie, gone from Every Friday Saturday night drinking, to perhaps once every 2 months

The missus would stop me buying Bowmans for a year.

I think my missus would destroy all my engines if she found out

I think Wallace is right that Fosters is not owned by Australians any more.
Can't remember who bought it now as I didn't care that it got sold as it is a terrible beer.

You can if you look around but it is real hard in London, easier in Scotland than England too.
There is a chain of Ozzy pubs can't remember the name though but they used to import the VB and carlton cold from OZ.
Need to be careful as they also brew both of them in London and its not the same.
If it says Victoria Bitter not Victoria Beer then its brewed in OZ for sure but they also brew VB for export and label it Victoria Beer.
The reason for the name change is, it is not a bitter it's a larger and real bitter drinkers in the UK would get upset with a larger called a bitter.

The Ozzy pub used to be in Edinburgh just up from Grassmarket towards Greyfriers Bobby on a back street.

I'll be in Glasgow on Sunday. It's only 30 mins from my home town.

Don't like the city much though. Much more a village person.
