Meths fired Jensen (FOUND)

I am looking for a Meths fired Jensen:

(Pictures from Roger's site)

Or does anyone have better pictures, so I can do a conversion?

I believe John Chapman has one.

You can buy a firebox and convert it that way.

I was thinking of picking up a 35 and using its firebox, because I need the flat black one.

It would need holes drilled in the sides and it looks like the opening in the front is taller.
Nick

In case anyone is wondering why I want the engine so bad, it is because I just found and bought a burner for one.

I have the burner, so now I need the engine.
Nick

Or, one of these would make the conversion very easy:

If I got the ebay one, it would give me a spare pulley, heater, and chimney stand.

Nick, if you are trying to go for an accurate reproduction of the early model 75 like that on John Chapman's site (and ref. pic on mine), you would need a black firebox and two rows of holes stamped in each side.

If you bought a modern Jensen 75 firebox it comes with faux brick, just one row of holes on each side and a higher opening in the front...fine choice if looking for functionality like I did on converting a 25 to run on meths, but not accurate in appearance like the original 75.

Best bet would be an orphan black flat sided, a good metal punch of the right size and a stout piece of oak to pound against.  I'm sure it wouldn't be overly difficult.  You might be able to drill the holes but I would be afraid of tearing the metal in the process.

Rog
Nick

A punch would work better.

Is the firebox opening in the front taller on the meths one?

Why did they skip a hole on the top? (5 on top, 6 on bottom)
johnreid

A good hole saw might work as well.
Nick

We do have a press (I forget how many tons) used for broaching.

It lowers slowly, so I could line the punch up easily. I'd probably have to make a punch just for this.

The fireboxes are thin, so I think Roger's suggestion of punching the holes would be best.
Nick

There are only 2 problems I see with using the ebay one and doing the conversion to the firebox.

I am wondering if the firebox is open in the back. I know on the electric ones, it is open on both ends.

The rivet holes in the side would also need to be filled. I also see that on the meths one, the holes for the heater-mount screws are there.
Les

What would happen if you sandwiched and clamped the firebox between two bits of metal and then drilled??
Nick

I found 2 more pictures from Cedge's website:

I still need to find a picture of the back of the firebox. If anyone ele owns one of these, I could use your help.

I also need to figure out what size the holes are.

This one, without burner was listed for $275, I wonder what it sold for.
johnreid

You sure dont see them very often, I suppose they are not inexpensive for that reason. Maybe Cedge has more photos, you might PM and ask.
Nick

There was a Coopers Brothers one I think, that went for a little over $100. I was 2nd high bidder.
johnreid

Meths fired?
Nick

It had the firebox. I can remember seeing two, but neither had the burners.
Nick

Just found this:

John Chapman posted it in the rare engine thread, about half way down:

http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org...ghlight=meths+jensen&start=15

Looks like I'll have to fill in the back of the firebox too.
Nick

I think John's may be the same on one Cedge's website.

Note the chip in the base straight out from the ID tag.
Nick

Another picture in another rare engine thread.

After a long search today, I have found a great thread. It also confirms John got his from Cedge.

If anyone else is interested:

One other difference between this and the electric 70:

Conversation between Casey (JensenSteamMan) and John Chapman:

Quote:
Casey: I have noticed this on all the meth #75's I have seen, They have have a cylinder identical in at least bore and stroke size with the #45 if not being exactly the same. Also the #75 and #45 were the only engines to have the connecting rod pressed flat on the end and then the hole drilled (I could be wrong on this though!). Normally they are a machined peice of brass block pressed into place on the stainless steel connecting rods or in #60/75/85 engines a hole simply drilled through them.

John: That is very interesting Casey, I had not noticed that. I had assumed that the piston/connecting rod was the same as on the No. 70. I have visited Steve's site for a further look and it is as you say. Well spotted sir.
IndianaRog

Nick, going by the pictures shown, YES, the front opening to the meths fired version is taller than a standard Jensen 35...I wonder if the entire firebox is thus taller???  I also did not know the rear of the firebox is closed as shown in one picture.

Conversion might be a bit more complicated than initially thought, especially if the firebox is taller      Though I have a reference pic on my website, I have not actually seen a meths fired model.  They are fairly rare but I have seen them sell on eBay for little more than a regular 70
Nick

If I get that 70 off ebay, I could do a conversion that would be very close.

I still wonder why they skipped a hole on the top of the firebox.
Nick

I finally found a meths fired 75 on ebay. It needs some work, but it should be fun.

At least my burner now has a home.

Mister Occlusion

Do we know what, or if, they ever had any sort of fire proofing under the firebox?

I see yours has got a bit of sheet metal, by the look of it.

I was wondering if Jensen stuck a sheet of asbestos or something down there...
Nick

I thought the wood was burned from some type of square burner. (Thanks for pointing out it's metal.)

I had planned to put a sheet of metal to protect it.

I have always seen them with just wood.

Congratulations.
johnreid

I too will have one to play with, I also now have a bad boiler so I am tempted to make a burner like Rogers, OR, to use the back section of boiler as a Tank, and fasten a tube to make a burner on the same principle as the Bowmanesque Jensen burner.

Nick, you need to mark this thread as FOUND
