mini marine engine

a fellow forum member gave me the use of his engine to copy in return for a new cylinder. this was because as he was building it he snapped his tap into the cylinder. as a result he never finished it which was lucky for me! originally the engine frame was cast by a process called "lost wax" this process allows for sharper details. its a very labour intense method and is very expensive!!!!!! so i use the traditional sand method . its rougher but cheaper and easier to work with. i had to "add" metal in places in order to be able to work this design in sand. to cast the cylinder i made a aluminium mandrel..slipped the cylinder over it. once it was cast i mounted the "big" end in the chuck .. cut off the "tail" (which was used to help set it up in the chuck) machined a face for the head gasket .. then drilled the cylinder and cut off the metal in the chuck. this engine is as tall as a box of matches. the original cylinder was drilled for a 9.5 mm piston but im making mine 8 mm as it wont be driving anything.
