Minor 2 RestorationFianally got round to sorting this Minor 2 out. For some people that may have forgotton (except Manxman) it had an extremly loose and leaky chimney.
Firstly, I knocked the front end off the boiler, that was a while ago anyway. This morning I drilled the rivet holding the chimney on and managed to find a brass but and bolt for the chimney. With some precise bolt dropping I eventually managed to get the bolt through the hole in the bottom.
Then it was a case of pushing the bolt through the hole where the rivet used to be, and putting the nut on the inside of the boiler and tightening as much as possible. It was important that the bolt was brass as it doesn't rust like a normal steel one would.
Next, I got some flux around the nut and soldered it up as much as possible, so I couldn't see the nut anymore. The chimney was on tight and hopefully steam tight. I then knocked the end cap on, ran some solder around it. Next the crank was a little bent so I took a hammer to it and manged to straighten it enough so it won't vibrate too much. It was then just a case of putting it all back together and hoping for the best.
Fired her up and it was perfect infact it was so damn fast I had to hold it down myself. It eventually went so fast that the boiler turned on top of the firebox so I had to blow the burner out . That's how to fix a loose chimney anyway guys! the video is below. Will upload some more pictures when i've cleaned it up.
I'm not sure why it's come up as video deleted, but click it and it does work
Anyone remember the SE3 that fell down the stairs? well I gave it to my brother and he's been working on it a while. I'll get a few pictures up and tell you what he's done to it tomorrow. He's done well for a first attempt although we need to sort out the over flow and test further

The best part about it, is the little brass screw looks like an original rivet, so it looks neat and does the job

Just finished cleaning up the Minor 2. Seemed to scrub up well enough considering . Base and firebox are a little scruffy, but can't do anything about that without a respray which is against my religion i'm afraid . Also pictured is that rubbish saw I bought, I must admit it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I've made one or two adjustments by adding weight and it may even cut through a match stick

Mutium hammer tool thingy, plasicy just like a Willesco

It will be geared down Mike, I'll run it from the same slow rotating shaft that the hammer is connected too

Yeah the tools look fine but the engines look like crap to be honest, especially the stationary engines... yuck

Those SEL/Multum saws and all the other tools all have plastic (Bakelite) bases. Thy're extremely light running, as the litle SEL engines (apart from the 1550 and the marine engine) don't develop any torque to speak of. Fun to run though, they go like the clappers.

Get them while they're cheap
The 1540 "Standard" is the best one IMHO. The twin piston 1550 "Major" is more powerful, but not as pleasing to the eye.

SEL Minor's very cute, tiny little engine, will easily sit in one hand. Doesn't have any power to speak off, but it does run well as long as you keep the driveshaft lubricated where it runs through the firebox.

I don't like those ones as much, just look too small to really do anything
My SEL was 15 pounds, can't get one much cheaper than that I suppose

The SEL junior is on a par with the MM1 - both relatively useless when it comes to driving anything.
