mm1 firebox

i bought a 49 mm1 eons ago and the firebox had been repainted
so i stripped the firebox as i want to get it back to the gloss black paint

what i found was the whole firebox was crome

so now i dont know wether to leave it as shiny crome or paint it back to black

what do you guys think

pics hopefully when i get some more camera batterys
tmuir

A chrome firebox on a mm1, never heard of that before.

You sure its chrome not stainless steel?
WHy would they paint over that as both chrome and SS is expensive.

i think it was john chapmans mm1 cant remember now

he said that he used to have it shiny before he sold it

pics

Lewis

at present the engine looks likes this
looks pretty nice if you ask me

tmuir

Could it just be the regular steel frame that's been highly polished?

im sure its crome my mec1 top looks exactly the same and thats crome

its a funny old one though
tmuir

If its chrome then I would say its happened after the factory as a home mod as they would of had to chrome it after shaping and spot wielding it and then send it off to a chroming business, Can't see Mamod doing that and certainly not painting it black afterwoods
Lewis

aye i recon it is a bodge up butn it looks good in my opinion

I agree looks good but certainly not how it left the factory.
MooseMan

Leave it like that Lew - looks great!
Lewis

aye guys

i know its not original but it had beeen repainted anyways
Graham-Jilly

looks great lewis would love one of those disk models
leave it I would say and pur a nice new decal on it
Mamodman123

Looks like it's been polished madly with a dremel or something

I would repaint, it will look loads better and will protect may have a problem getting the paint to stick, so wet and dry it first if you go to repaint.

I'd deffo repaint!
Cranko

Did you buy it from sandra steam
Lewis

no i didnt i bought it from john chapman
he used BBQ paint which does the job fine

i actually slipped with the brasso and it took a right load of paint of the side so i thought i may as well do it all
Wallace

That looks real good Lewis

Does look like Chrome doesn't it?

I like it. I would leave it as is. MM is right, you would have to wet and dry it before painting if it's chrome and even then you may have troubles with the paint coming off in the future as anything that is chrome and needs painting should be sandblasted first.

That would be why the paint already has come off with brasso.

Nice addition to your collection

aye wal thats the problem

i think i will leave it for a while and then eventually i will respray it
James

Hmm, IMHO it looks cheap and tacky with all the brass AND steel

Defo repaint.
Lewis

righto looks like a spray painting time again then

gloss black baked in the oven
James

Good choice Lewis
Lewis

only prob is getting the paint to stick
James

Rub some fine wet and dry paper over it, to give the paint something to hold onto.
Lewis

aye but i think that it may not be enough
James

Undercoat?
Lewis

aye i think i will may have to give it one

either way ill get it back to a factory finish
James

Jolly good!

Remember, this type didn't have decals
Lewis

aye im aware that they didnt

wonder why
James

Cos they had the name stamped on the crank
Lewis

mm2s had it one the crank end but they still had decals
James

Yeah but this was a big crank weren't it. Most people hardly notice the ones on the end of them cranks (they were on all models at the time) but on the MM1 you can't miss it.
SillyBilly

I'd of left it, looks diffrent IMHO.
MooseMan

Lew if you want to paint that you may have to get some etching primer.
Lewis

where can you get that moose ?
Wallace

What Moose suggested might work, and over here is available from most Auto Parts stores. Just look amongst the primers

Lewis, just a warning on using primer on the firebox.....

I am not too sure how it will handle the heat, unless there is a heatproof primer?

I have got epoxy enamel to handle firebox temps, but only with baking it carefully.

With the etch primer, make sure its for enamel paints, and you might have to experiment. e.g. Spray it on, bake it, then put the black over it? Not too sure.

But when I do epoxy enamel to handle heat, I spray it on, let it completely dry according to instructions, then bake it as follows.

(Temps in Cels)
Put it in a cold oven and set temp at 90
Once it hits 90 leave it for 45mins.
Turn temp up to 150 and when it reaches it, bake for 20mins.
Then up to 200 and when it gets to that, give it 20mins.

It takes heaps longer to bake than normal VHT paint.

Disclaimer: The above was for epoxy enamel. Not sure with primer?

Wallace I know the etch primer I used for the brass on my Lady Anne required you to paint over it before it had fully set to ensure the top coat bonded to the etch primer so spraying etch primer and then baking it first may not be such a good idea.
Wallace

Thanks for that info Tony.

Very handy. I never used etch primer before.

I think it might be best to try a few experiments on some scrap metal first Lewis. I know some degreasers can't be used on Chrome. I'm not sure if they strip it, or just damage the looks. That may be another option to try, as a test spot first?

Let us know how you get on mate
Cranko

Hey Lewis, let us know what you do and how it works please, this is a definite learning curve for me
big d

fire box

i found a few items were chrome steel.i know for a fact .mild steel can be bought with that finish .It is a very poor grade steel but it looks good.It is very cheap to buy like that if you dont want it to rust very qwickly .as it is about 24 gauge metal . i replace parts with 20gauge stainless steel and i find that to thick to get the same radius on the bends. it does shine well you would not notice the difference .Very clean to use
Have you tried welding brass with a tig welder and pure argon. i used to do it every day of the week the good thing it has gone out of fashion
