mm1?

bought this yesterday from ebay think it a mm1 but dont think base is original if it isnt how easy is it to source one if atall
MooseMan

Base looks like a bit of Meccano, but that engine will polish up lovely. Welcome BTW!
willsy

is there any way of finding q base which it should be on
Les Marsh

Are you going to keep it as a mobile?

What about
http://www.forest-classics.co.uk/
or
http://www.chasteam.com/
willsy

was gonna get it back to how it should look without the meccano base
Nick

Is it setup to run the wheels? If so, I would get it doing that, because these are fairly common.
johnreid

Regardless of the base, if it is a good runner you have a real gem there. Restoration would be fun on that one if you choose to go that route, once you find the base it is polish and paint, maybe a decal too.
Minor1PJG

Welcome welcome welcome.

Looks like a MM2 - too big for a MM1.

Chas at Paper 'n' Steam quite often has odd bases I saw he had some for a SP2 at Kempton, he has boxes of odd bits.
Mamodman123

Just look at the firebox, you can see it's a MM2 as MM1's always had the smaller and thinner ones!

Welcome to the forums!

Dates from around 1958-62ish
Minor1PJG

I know,  ssshhh.

Look, I was going easy on the newbie
willsy

yep you be right it is mm2 as turned up today so have now seen it properly and fink just gonna strip down clean it and attack it with brasso  and leave paint

erikl

you can get that realy shiney again with enough brasso
willsy

just stripped it and started cleaning the boiler and in places has got what looks like rust any idea what it is and how to get rid of it

Can't really remove the rust as such. I usually wipe over with rust remedy and use back to black to cover the rust, works ok!
willsy

sorry i didnt really explain very well its not the frame but the boiler ends that look like going rusty
johnreid

Careful polish with Brasso or similar polish and hope it isnt dezincafication.
willsy

whatever it is it seems to be coming off and have now decided am gonig to repaint after all as paint is pretty far gone
Minor1PJG

Sometimes you can get brown spots on the brass boiler end around the water level drain point from the steel 'wings' of the level plug rusting and the rusty water contacting the brass.

It should all polish off with Brasso.  Brasso is quite agressive - I'm polishing out some minor scratches that are all over a MM1 that I bought after the previous owner cleaned it with a power sander or similar
willsy

half a tin of brasso wadding and it now dont look to bad

tomorrow hopefully be able to get most if not all of it painted. and why would anyone attack a boiler with a power sander good luck trying to sort out those scratches
Minor1PJG

There you go - lovely
willsy

have had a good think today and am gonna leave the paint  as is. and thinking about selling it on as i am trying to find one still with its base. and gonna fire it up tomorrow to see how well the wheels run as have connected drive band from fly wheel to base

That should put the price up,    now it's clean and very shiney.
Nick

Can't wait to see if it actually drives!

If it works, it should put up the value even more. A rare Mamod Mobile. Thumbs up!
Minor1PJG

It reminds me of my first Mamod, a Minor1 of course.

I really wanted a TE1 but a MM1 is what my parents bought for me so with some meccano I tried to make it mobile.  It didn't really work   Well not if you factor in me having to push it
willsy

decided not patiant enough so gonna fire it up in abit.  how do i post videos  in case by sum chance this actually works
Graham-Jilly

upload the video to photobuck the same way as the pics. then post link on here
willsy

it actually works and dont even need a push to help it along. crashed a few times due to goin abit quick but  no damage done and will post vid in abit
Mamodman123

Cleaned up a treat
willsy

first this pic is how the engine looks at the mo and just wondering wheather people think it a good or bad idea to paint it

and here the video i know it pretty bad but i discovered this evening that trying to film it at same time as trying to stop it crashing didnt really work
Mamodman123

Leave the paint, I would anyway!

It badly needs gearing down though, it doesn't half rocket away

Those oscillators really put out the RPMs
Nick

Did the burner fall out or did you pull it out?

If you are going to sell it, advertise it with the drive band on as it would bring more money, but if you repaint it the new buyer might be upset upon arrival and leave bad feedback.
Les Marsh

I would leave the paint as it is, as people prefer the original finish, and congratulations on your new mobile.
Graham-Jilly

sure gets a move on
Minor1PJG

Wow, that goes really well.

I'd leave the paint as is too
johnreid

You could race SRs with it and win!
willsy

cheers everyone for your feedback on painting or not and am gonna leave  paint. does anyone have ne ideas on how to gear it down atall

get some meccano and put a larger pulley on a layshaft, that'll gear it down better.

I'm actually going to buy a beat up MM1 simply so I can make one of these just like yours.  I think its hilarious the speed it will go up to!
willsy

cheers for that gonna have look on ebay in abit for some meccano as i have none. and you def right it pretty damn quick
willsy

just found a set of 4 3.5 inch meccano pulleys do  you rekon these should gear it down enough

willsy

It depends on if you wish to buy a complete engine, and also if you need to sell this one in order to afford another.
I presume you want to at least get back what you paid, therefore I would put in up for the maximum time, and maybe 3-4 pounds less than it cost you, and maybe think about a reserve as well.
Mamodman123

Stick it on ebay and see what she makes.

You could start it at what you paid then it should go for more!
CCairns

Just caught up with this posting.

Liked the video, as others have said it goes really fast for an MM2.

Hope you are successful on ebay, prices are going crazy on some items at present.
