MM2 Restored

Completed my MM2 restoration tonight.

Scrapped the red base, and mounted her on a wooden base. Included a dynamo and bulb, which im currently having trouble getting the lamp to light. She slows down when I switch on the dynamo, so I know its producing some current, but obviously not enough to power this little lamp.

I also had a steam leak on the steam pipe, and in my infinite wisdom attempted to re solder the pipe whilst slighlty happy on stella Bodged that up nicely lol, how do you get rid of the over spill on the solder?

i dont know if the have them in the uk but a dremel with the grinding attachment should work

Yeah, Iv got one of those,

Not attempting it tonight though, I have butchered it enough with the soldering, and would be mortified if it went through the boiler

ah well atleast you got it workin
Ross

Wow that's really nice is that the one for your nephew?

with the light not glowing, the ration between the fly wheel looks a little small (is that the right word?)... if the flywheel had a larger circumference that should help generate more power... i hope thats right, correct me if im wrong

Yes, I think that if the pulley of the flywheel had a larger circumfrence or the pulley on the dynamo had a smaller one, then it might have a better chance of getting the light going. This would also make it harder for the Mamod, though.

A Light Emitting Diode will have lower power consumption but will not look right on that nice board/setup of yours though.

Regarding your excess soldering you can buy a reel of Desolder Wick you just heat up the excess solder dip this copper looking wick into it and the solder is drawn into the wick then nip the end of with scissors and start again or use a desolder pump.

You can get both items from Squires Model and Craft Tool Shop
they are a mail order company

makes it harder as a result of more friction? But increases Voltage/Amperes

Hiya yeah, she turned out really well
rangerssteamtoys

That turned out great

As for the lamp not lighting up and the engine slowing down, a larger pulley on the generator would increase the power from the mamod, but the generator would be turning slower.

I would go with rogs way of removing solder, just heat it up until its melted then wipe it away with a cotton Q-tip or rag.

Yep, it makes it harder because of the friction (I think) because if the flywheel pulley is bigger than the dynamo pulley, the dynamo's obviously doing more RPMs that the flywheel pulley. This will generate more power, but also more friction, thus making it harder work for the Mamod.

That is a really smart looking set up - Best to drink more stella on each occasion you look at it then the solder overspill will not look as bad.

lol, Thanks

I just heated it up and flicked it off with a cotton bud.Workeda treat, then just polished ther excess bits out.

Next comes the SE2... so keep a look out

a labour of love ;no doubt.
