MMan...your SE3 absolutely screams!!Hi James, stumbled upon a YouTube video today of your SE3 approaching liftoff rpms. Wow, is that typical for the model or have you tweeked it in some way?
At that rate of speed it could "almost" catch a Jensen #5

Most SE3s do . . . very much the Ferrari of the toy steam world. As for a Jensen no. 5 . . . .

THIS IS FAST . . .

I think he means mine on Youtube
The secrets are good seals, well run in and well oiled and they will fly!!!!
I can get it faster with the original heavier flywheel on

I meant James (aka: Mamodman's SE3)Mike,
So that you don't go thru life deprived of viewing a "real" Ferrari, check out the Jensen #5 YouTube video within my website at the following link:
http://www.indianarog.com/jensensteamengines.htm#85663891
While I can't be absolutely certain without a tach, I do believe a Jensen #5 would blow the doors off an SE3 in the speed dept.
Once that heavy cast iron flywheel gets going, it has incredible momentum and will drive any accessory (or 10 of them) that one can hook up to it. Of course being tethered to mains power vs. Esbit or meths, it's not quite a fair comparison!!
cheers,

My SE3 must be missing something...Mike,
I have an SE3 myself but I think mine must be missing something...I simply can't find the rose colored glasses that must be standard issue on SE3's that reside outside the US.
Perhaps I just need to inhale some meths to get into the right mindset that slows the Jensen #5 down and speeds the SE3 up...yes, that must be it as otherwise you'd have to be jesting. Though half English myself (mum's from Exeter)...I still can't always tell when you guys are joking.
Check out Mooseman's site as well...he has a Jensen #5 that likewise is a "SE3DBO" (SE3 Door Blower Offer), maybe the clear difference will be more visible eminating from a British website
cheers,
Roger

I think with my well tuned ear for speed . . . maybe the SE3 just squeaks it
But then you knew Id say that . . .
The No.5 looks a robust fella.

I used to have an SE3, but I sold it....I regret that now, and I intend to remedy this in the near future
I do have a fantastic vintage Jensen 5, and that is without a doubt the most powerful single acting oscillating engine I have ever seen - the thing is just unstoppable, freewheeling under full steam it is incredibly fast!
It packs enough of a punch to drive a small engine....with the exhaust!

Spokesman...ever the diplomat!!I think I see two winners in an SE3 vs. Jensen 5 speed quest.
The SE3 would win the Esbit/Meths fired class ...the Jensen 5 would win the mains powered category .
Frankly, above 2000 rpms, a blur is a blur. Maybe one of these days if someone had one of those electronic tachs we could scientifically rank a number of engines...a good project for a pub get together!!
Then again, who cares how fast they go...in reality the engines they were based on never went near as fast. One thing about mains powered engines is the ability via dimmer to throttle them down to just a tick over...60-100 rpms...then you see the beauty of these engines for what they are.
With that...enjoy STIA one and all. Here in the states we'll all be watching the SuperBowl on Sunday, and for the first time in history the Indianapolis Colts (my hometown team) are battling the Chicago Bears for the championship...Sunday is a very BIG sports day in the US!!
cheers,

Ha.... this is a fun thread!
Obviously, we all know the overall winner is the Jensen
95G turbine.... rumored to *ahem* turn at speeds of 14,000rpms,
11,000 when hooked up to the generator....
in the piston category, I would say the 5 will completely
win. Although a #70 still gives it a run for the money (even
though the #5 and #70 are essentially the same engine)
I might post up a link to the video of my #70 at max RPMS
that whenever I hear it I head for cover!!
Cheers,

There is a digital tach available from hobbico for the little gas motors, perhaps that would work??? Or, even, i have a stationary bike that has a speed-o on it.

Sorry mate - if it was meths fired I'd take it, but as it is electrically heated with a system that would not pass a PAT test in a million years it's just not an option....plus I have my daughter in tow, and she'll want to browse.
I'll see if I can find some hires video of it and plonk it on a DVD fr you though.

We are thinking of taking our small brand new petrol generator. Could plug it into that if you wanted to?

With all due respect to the SE3 v's Jensen #5 debate, it's not the RPM you want, it's the power.
ie, take a diesel engine. Low RPM but powerful
And a rotary engine. High RPM but would be lucky to pull the skin off a rice pudding
We need someone here to hook both up to some contraption (a crane?) and really put them to a test
Now that'd be good.

Well, the Jensen wins on that ground as well too : )

I think we need more of those digital tachos for a definative answer.

I'm going to measure the speed of my SE3! Then we'll see which is faster
|
JensenSteamMan

Well first fact is without even haveing to run either of the engines I'm pretty sure the Jensen has more displacement. A Jensen #5 / #70 / #25 / #75 have the same displacement as a Wilesco D22.
If somebody gives me the dimensions (boreXstroke) of the mamod then i'll post the displacement alongside the displacement of the Jensen.
Cheers,
Casey

From what I've heard Jensen will wn in the whats bigger comp.
Will probably win in whats more solidily made comp.
For power if you include Jensen's double action engines only Mamods SP6 could compete but in speed its fair game I think.

Casey,
Make a erector set crane, and a scale that measures something like, maybe up to 20 newtons, and hook up a SE3 and a #5 to it and see who can pull the most newtons.

Mamodman123
|
We talking speed here guys or RPM not pulling power!
|
MooseMan
|
If it's RPM you're after....my SEL 1540 is the fastest engine in my collection. Freerunning it sounds like a hummingbird. No power to speak of, though.
I gotta get me one of them tachometers!
|
Roly Williams
|
My Jenny Wren goes twice as fast as my SE3 so I guess it'd beat the lot Mind you, it's not surprising - there's hardly any mass in the piston to push back and forth. It just hums along - literally
|
TE1A_man

Another idea, hook up a SE3 to a dynamo and light, hook up a #5 to the same dynamo and bulb, and see which one burns brighter (or burns it out )

That's not actually a bad idea mate.
To be more accurate, hook the dynamo up to a voltmeter to give exact readouts.
