Mobile mamod SE2Got my flatbase SE2 this week as well,
Its err well ummmm
Anyway steamed her up, but the SV and steam union leak a bit, so power was down. Tried but couldnt get her to move around.
The powertrain is quite interesting similar to Mooses Womar.
The wheels must be pretty old meccano me thinks.
I think in all honesty I will dismantle the mobile bit. Although its history, its not quite my thing.
The rubber feet are there but whats with the whistle
is it a bit missing
Manx- any interest in a unique mobile

Funny how many you see of these over time.
anyway the whistle is missing its top cover bit, thats going to be difficult to find....They just solder on to what you have there.
I think i'd take it off the meccano myself

Very clever, but I would take it off of the Meccano as well. Those are fun engines.

If you don't want the wheels send me a PM as I could be interested in them and yes they are old Meccano wheels.
I agree I would pull it apart too but I kinda like the look of it.
I bet the kid that built it all those years ago was real proud of himself too.

Vintage make-it-work engineering. Love that stuff.
I'd have mixed feelings about it, but would probably end up taking it apart.
There's a nice old brass flywheeled flatbase in there. Be fun to restore,
plus some pretty cool old Meccano bits. Neat!

I wonder how much cleaner it is underneath the Meccano? Or is it rustier there?

That's an interesting piece of the past, . I'm in two minds as whether to leave it be for it's enginuity or just have the FB SE2 seperate. Can you leave the frame intact as it an excellent example of a youg persons past endevours.
As far as the whistle is concerned Mamodfan may be able to make you one or perhaps another member who has a lathe and a postwar SE2 might be able to also do it for you.
It's worth checking the SV to make sure there is no crud between the SV top and the body of the SV. Failing that, try and wind up the tension on the spring a bit or replace it with a stronger one.
Nice buy.
Cheers

I agree with Chris's comment.

Well, I of course think it's been improved by giving it wheels. I not sure it's any different to those who today would add brass bands, chimney cowls and brake blocks. I'd clean it and leave it. It's a lovely piece of history and a great toy engine. I think that little engine was played with by someone who knew the models value and didn't just want it sitting on a shelf.
If it was mine I think I'd try and keep it's history and the wheels make it a bit more fun.

That is great Atticman.
I was going to say take the Meccano off it, but I feel I would leave it also. Just for something different.
The wheels alone can go for around 5 pound each.
