Model steam turbine plant.

Here's another imminent arrival for me. I've been after a decent steam turbine plant for some time now as i used to work on full sized plants. The whole setup is 900mm long and was originally fitted in a 2200mm model boat! I expect it will take a bit of going over to get her running and eventually i'll find a suitable boat to put her in!

These are the only pics i have so far but i'll get a score more on soon.

A very interesting steam plant.

What sort of boat would this be suitable for?

What a beauty!!!!!!

She was fitted in this!

If i'm going to be building a boat for it i'm going to go along the lines of a classic steam yacht much like the Delphine although she has reciprocating steam engines as opposed to the turbine. The MY Savarona was originally fitted with turbines so i'll start off with that plan

Wow that is one seriously nice bit of kit!

WOW!

OMG- that is the mother of all power sources!! Awesome in blue!!

The Blue Devil itself!!
Sandman

Jeez, that looks powerful.

WOW O WOW!!!

That is a serious bit of kit, very very nice boat. The engineering on the boat and turbine looks very classy.

Thanks for sharing it with us, is the boat yours and what is going in the boat?

Any news on the steam yacht?

The plant came out of the boat and the boat will stay with its owner. I am lucky enough just to have gotten hold of the machinery The plant is the best part of a meter long and it came from Germany, If the boat had been available i guess that the chapest way to have gotten it back to Scotland would have been to sail it!

My plan will be to find a suitable hull or kit to suit the plant. Sooooo... If anyone knows of a 2 meter plus steam yacht kit or hull available let me know!

Ahh, the Delphine is still here but it's been a really busy week for us here as our re-fit is nearing its end. I know the man to speak to so i hope to collar him during this week. I can't really roll up and ask for a nosey about the engine room with security and the like. Shame but true.

That is one very nice and unusual looking steam plant.

Hi

I far as I know , there isn't allot of kits of that size. I think the best way forward would be to find a hull and take it from there. There are various manifactures of hulls but again not many at that size.

I think Sirmar for Naval type boats and there is what used to be Metcalf Mouldings also Deans Marine have a side line called Mouldeans may be worth a look.

I will find some links and post them. That is a real nice turbine, would like to see it run, looks a real beast. Also, what a ship!! The yacht isn't to bad either.

That is a serious bit of kit!

Do you plan on posting a video of her in steam any time soon?

The turbine itself reminds me of the Iron Clad ships:

Bogstandard

That is a lovely bit of engineering there, someone must have had a real passion to make all that lot.
If it runs as well as it looks you will have a totally unique power plant.

It is always a shame to bury it inside a boat where it is very rarely seen.

If you could moditfy the funnels slightly, it would make an ideal plant for a scale 'Turbinia'

http://www.flamsteed.info/fasturbinia.htm

A fairly easy hull to replicate yourself.

John.
duncandumpertruck

Thank you John! I forgot about the Turbinia. You're right about the funnel re-arrangement. Keeping the two fairly limits me to obviuously a twin funnel ship! I haven't seen the plant yet as it's on its way to me. When i get home i'll get more pics of it and i'll spool up the turbine on air. i didn't ask too many questions about it but i feel that indeed she is something special. There appears to be a gearbox with twin outputs as the boat she was fitted in was a twin screw. It also looks like she's a reverser too. I think i see a condenser under the turbine. Should be interesting to see if she's more than a single rotor too.

I see your turbine is coming along nicely, looks like something very special will be coming! What boat are you planning on building to fit the plant into?

BRGDS, Ruairidh.
steamyjim

I'd love to see a model of Turbinia

Hi,

There's a joke in our model boat club. one of the chaps had a 4 ft model of Turbinya stolen. without recovery.

The joke is , what is faster than Turbinya,  - The Stokers -
I mean can you imagine having to feed coal into that thing!!

Nice boat though

The poor old stokers must have has some life. Imagine shovelling coal for the whole watch?! Thank goodness for diesel (and HFO for the unlucky souls on the biggies)
mogogear

The lines on that Turbinia are marvelous...!!

My mind is whirring..I see lots of google image searches ..I like that "raked " bow and front stack... Very , how shall we say..."Modern"!?

Beautiful boat, incredible turbine.  Why did the owner want to separate them.?

Ruairidh., The pictures you post are like something out of fantasyland.

If you're still looking for a big enough boat we have a 17' Boston Whaler

How do you get that in the jacuzzi??

On a serious note it would be a shame to bury the engine and boiler inside a boat where you cannot see it.
bessytractor

wow thats a fair old bit of kit, that boiler looks like it will stand for no nonsence.  I look forward to seeing it running.

Unfortunately the builder of the boat and engine passed away and his son was selling on the engine but keeping the boat. I got the impression that the guy was also sad to see the engine going as he said it held a great deal of sentimental value to him. I promised him that it was going to a good home and that it would eventually be back in a boat again.

Thanks for the offer of the Whaler!

I just noticed!!!

HERESY I DO DECLARE

I am sure that there were mechanical Stokers in the larger ships.

Titanic and Queen Mary had fireman shovelling.

That is until they became oil fired (and Titanic obviously didn't last long enough for that lol).

Divide it into three like that rather beautiful traction engine that suddenly appeared in one of your posts. Any chance you could direct me to the thread or post it again?

Seriously, I just spent 15 minutes looking for that photo to show Andrew

I hope you are having fun with your steam turbine......it should be in your hands by now I think...I thought of you when I found the following BIG boat... a  big tug does  over 5 feet long and in need of a power plant!! It may not be what you are aiming for...but thought I would throw it in!

Ahhhhh! I've not seen the turbine yet or any of the other engines that i've bought over the last two and a bit months as i've been working away. BUT! I arrived home yesterday and tomorrow i will head to see my father who has been having them all arrive at his house! He say's there's little cupboard space left There will be postings of all of them in the week to come so watch out

That is a big old tug isn't it?! Interesting to see what it goes for as not so many people have space for a five foot tug! Pick up only is a pain as i'm miles away from it.
H2o vapour

Hi

Best of luck with it and please post some pic's when you can

My father built a 5 ft TID tug  - that went well with a Stuart D 10 - fond memories-

What was the boat that this mighty looking turbine came from? It looked like a fantastic museum quality model!

Looks like you need a trip to the National Maritime museum for some inspiration as to what kind of vessel should house the turbine.
mogogear

I still  vote for a Big version of the Turbinia
steamyjim

I agree Mo!
mogogear

That boat is a dream to look at - I so want to visit the UK and go to the museum where she resides!!

Not being born in England - ( My grandfather was the first in our family born in the states) it's significance escaped me- It has a WOW factor beyond description - I love the swept stack and the tail and bow angles!!
steamyjim

Aye, it's a beautiful boat!

I must visit it at sometime. Im going to try and get to a lot of museums around the country this year...so we shall se
