More burner experimentsWell... I came across a can of gelled alchol, so I figured I would see how it does as fuel.
My poor Jensen! Look at all that soot!!!
This is the esbit tray, alongside the tray I made for the gel. The brown sooty mess left in the tray speaks for it self. When the esbit tray is cleaner, I would call this a failure!!!
Here are some images of the vapor style burner. Work better than expected, just a pain to pre-heat. But it will run the 76 from cold to low on water on a single fill. About 20-25 minutes. But the wick does not burn. So this is a good solution for the 76, then I can still use esbit if I need to. The esbit does still win from a portability point of view.
I am going to try and make something similar for the D12, so I can leave the esbit tray in it. Not sure yet. I like the Hard Drive magnet, I hve a couple of perfecly good hard drives, but old enough that they will never see the inside of a computer again, so I think I will try Mr. O's penny idea for that one.

Soot isnt that big a problem, you need Maas or Semichrome polish.
Experimenting is how we learn.

Burners take time, practice and patience. Also imagination. The idea is there, now come the practice and time.

Yup. I just figured that you all would like the polishing I have to do!!! But I would say the gelled alchol is a bust!

I thought that stuff didn't flow?
But a 20-25 minute run sure isn't a bad thing.
You must have a computer recycler around some place where you can get a lousy old drive?
I had several old 3-6gig ones that I was about to throw out when I thought to take them apart. I also saved the platters, though I'm not sure why. They do make great mirrors, save for the hole in the middle
Spiff burner, though. I am totally sold on the Bowman'ish style of element - fire tube vs wick tubes. Slide a bit of the next larger size pipe over it and you've got a flame regulator (K&S brass is good for this).

No... I burned the gelled alchol in the tray I made. It is a mess.. lots of soot and residue. The vapor burner is meths. I need a better wick. I will stop being cheap, and go get the fiberglass tiki wicks... 3bux at Lowes. As soon as I can, I gotta get some of that ceramic stuff, and see how that goes.

Fiberglass wick isn't expensive if you buy it at your merchant of stoves.
It's used to make the stove air tight.

I`ve saved several, along with their bearings.
Future project, frictionless flywheels?

I was thinking of that, but I was not sure if the graphite would have any effect.

Old CD ROM and DVD drives have those strong magnets too. They are in the lens focusing mechanism, so they are smaller approx 8mm x 6mm x 3mm but strong and come in useful for various things.

Good to know.. I think I may still have a few of those around too. Now i can finally throw the foolish things out.
trash to treasure, its the best!!

That looks like a great way to make a cheap Bowman style burner
I might give it a try in the near future.

Yup.. all plumbing parts, a bit of sheet copper for the ends, and the burner I used brass tube, thinner, so heats up better.
It work OK. I think a better wick will improve it. I will put Tiki wick in it this weekend, and give it a test.

Well as a reservoir wick burner it doesnt really need to heat up I want the vapors to burn. I bought the Meths Jensen from Les and am thinking of a way to do a simple burner.
I want to end up with an supersized version of the burner in this photo

Right. The reseviour does not heat up, I just have to pre heat the tube a bit, and then runs fairly well. But the wick is a bit too short, but the wick does not have a singe mark on it. Works fine in the 76, and I am thinking up a version for the D12. This is why I REALLY want a 75. I think I can make a really cool burner for one of those.
I like fire!!

If being a pyro means burning your fingers. I have burned my fingers alot. You should have no feeling in you fingers then
Or a higher tolerance of pain to the fingers like me
My mom is like "aaaaahhhhhhh its hot" I am like " its not that hot, you big whiney baby"

When I was your age, my Mom was BIG woman.... it could have meant my death. Not to mention I was living in a foriegn country at that time.
In most countries in the world it is perfectly OK to beat your children if they earned it.
Not to mention things have changed since I was a kid. I got my butt kicked a few times! Deserved it too!!!
My fingers have been desensitized for years. My hands are very calloused.

I've not really experimented much with wicks, other than trying steel wool once or twice.
I used this clothesline type rope in one before reading that it was cotton-POLY. ...Didn't melt, so I keep using it
I ought to try some of the insulating material Jensen sells. Just never think to.
