I wonder if the diesel loco is now a compulsary regulation to have on a steam powered train as I noticed one on both video's.

OOOOO, a double header too! So nice
Agreed the sound on the second clip was fantastic. I used to be a member of a group that sponsored Mainline Steam Excursions in the US and many passenger cars require Head End Power, so unless a special HEP car was in the train ( rarely in fact but there was one Baggage Car that has a Prime mover in it ) a Diesel is sometimes required to provide Heat Lights and AC.
No longer is there Mainline Steam Excursions in the Eastern half of the US, so it gladdens me to see that it is done some elsewhere.

Brilliant clips- the noise is fab
I think its a case of look what we found broken down on the mainline earlier, and therefore the diesels are being towed back for repairs

I can not find the links to this story, but it is true. I believe this was in the early 1980s and there was an individual that was conducting experiments to see if there was a chance for a Steam Locomotive to return to service due to an Energy Crunch. This Locomotive was used for some short Freight Trials and of course for Excursion service. One big complaint that the Railroads have about Excursions is that they have a way of tying up the tracks and slowing Freights.
One day while preparing for an excursion a Time Value Freight breaks down on the Mainline, miles away from any other Diesel Locomotives, the Steam Engine ( Chessie 614 I believe ) actually went and saved the day, pulling the full train including the broke down Diesels!
The trial ended and the return to Steam never happened, but still, it makes one smile that a cursed Steamer came to the rescue and saved the day.

It isn't on some parts of the network Griff. Down here all the excursions recently haven't had a diesel on the back

I love a nice bit of rain & steam, adds plenty of atmosphere. That's why I spend a day at the Bluebell around New Year if I can, one of my faviroute days of Christmas.
