MSS control

is it possible to squeeze all the radio control equipment needed into a MSS cab or do you need a trailing wagon or tender for it
CCairns

Short answer - Not Really.

Possibly by fitting a mini servo & receiver, with batteries under the cab floor. But depends on method of firing. Solid fuel requires the biggest space to get the tray in, meths firing has the disadvantage of spills with the subsequent fireball melting said radio control, and gas burner requires space for the tank.

Best to just have servo in cab, with receiver, batteries & on/off switch cleverly disguised in a tender behind.

Biggest problem is getting the aerial set up properly, as these locos can runaway at Grand Prix speeds, with similar crash damage caused.

titan is best to explain this, i heard him talking about it at merstham
CCairns

But even his Radio Control was subject to interference (possibly the adjacent model boat pool), and Titan the loco was being manually controlled at Merstham.
andysleigh

no, i mean he was talking about someone who managed to do it.
Titan

That is correct.  It was done with one normal sized servo, but it was a squeeze.  The secret is to replace the AA battery back with an AAA battery pack. The reciever and battery pack, and aerial are attached to the inside of the cab back.  Then they are out of the way when you need access to the burner. Probably only suitable for meths fired locos as there may not be space for the tank or the handle on the solid fuel burner tray. The servo sits in the usual place in the corner of the cab.
