MSS saddle tank

I am quite interested in the MSS saddle tank engine.
I have seen people say how bad the side tank engines are and seen review on the side tanks but have never heard anyone talk about the saddle tank and was wondering what they are like are they any better or are they worse than the standard engine.

I'm not an authority on the subject but I thought there was little to choose between the mms sidetank or the saddle tank? It seems to be just a cosmetic tank positioned atop the boiler. One thing it does help to hide the boiler so you don't see all the burning and gunk from the meths.

Mamod Loco's are good but they need a little work to get 'em to run sweetly. I think the people who criticise them are mostly the garden railways types who spend 1500 on a loco, for 150 quid it's basically a toy, but with some work can be a great addition to a proper garden railway too. Last copy of the 16mm Association magazine featured a DVD, the first sequence of video was of a lovely little mamod sidetank steaming very well!

I have just looked at 1 on the internet and can see it doesnt have a whistle does this mean you cant fit a proper regulator to it

Hi Pauly,

I think the Saddle tank was introduced because it was closer in design to a real 2' gause prototype (the orginal side tank locomotive was a freelance design). I don't own one, but I wonder whether the higher centre of gravity makes the characteristic 'wobble' any better.

I havent seen a whistle on them, but then everything is moved around - I think the dome is moved further back as well.
