MTA, the name with no meaning!Thought I'd refresh my Meet the Member thread,as I just emailed someone about me:
My name is Simon King and I am of 15 years of age. I am currently in Year 11 at Westergate Community School and am in the middle of my last year of GCSE courses. I am taking English, Science, Maths, French, Business and Communication Studies, Systems and Control, and lastly Resistant Materials. The last two are most helpful in the career I am aiming to get when I leave college. When I leave secondary school, I am going to Chichester College and will be doing three courses, a BTEC in Mechanical Engineering, a Motor Vehicle Repair Course, and a Carpentry and Joinery course. All these courses are one year full time. When I leave college, I hope to either work in Aerospace engineering or work for a company that help repair Diesel or electric locomotives. I recently had a week's work experience at Metrobus Ltd. in Crawley, working in the maintenance depot repairing buses both old and new. Now onto my involvement with the railways. I have always had a passion for railways since a very young age, my family think this passion was passed from my great grandfather who used to drive on the mainline. I have worked on the Bluebell Railway (www.bluebellrailway.co.uk) as an engine cleaner, but after two years I left as it was too far away too make regular visits. When we moved to Yapton, my passion for the railways kicked off even moreso. I joined the South Downs Light Railway (www.sdlrs.com) in December 2000 and have since learned how to drive and fire steam locos, and drive petrol/diesel/battery powered engines. In April 2007, I will be passed as a passenger driver as I will then be of legal age. I then joined the Chichester and District Society of Model Engineers (www.cdsme.co.uk) in 2004, this site is usually missed by the general public as little is known about it outside West Sussex. Then in January 2006, I started volunteering on the railway at Amberley Working Museum (www.amberleymuseum.co.uk). This railway is short, but it is quite large in terms of stock (the track gauge being 2 feet). I have also joined the Traction Engine group at Amberley, and recently was steersman on a Marshall 10 ton Steam Roller at the Amberley's Autumn Vintage Vehicle Show. And most recently, I have joined another railway, of which is very special. The Great Cockrow Railway in Chertsey, Surrey (www.cockrow.co.uk/). This is considered as the finest 7 1/4 inch gauge railway in Europe, and has many fine locos and a great set-up.
Bit long I know!!!

Hi, MTA
I tell you, you English must have a helluva school system. I thought I was typing to a 35 yr old. Your avatar fits perfectly and when I read your posts I hear in my mind the cultured voice of an old Victorian-era land owner tut-tutting about the miserable peasantry. I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts, and chuckle out loud at your sharp, dry wit with just the right amount of sarcasm. My favorite line from your posts is upon learning that the engine in a video was run with compressed air, "Didn't see that, air, no, you want it to run on steam!" Then there's "The name's Steel...Ben Steel". Delightful. Excellent.

PS The only plastic working equipment we have is a heater (to make it soft to bend it). Although this is slow, I suggested instead to bung a blowtorch in a vice and use some tongs to put the plastic in the flame. Although this didnt go down too well when I left it in for too long and it melted the floor The other is a vacuum former, which has a heater to heat up the plastic, then a former is placed underneath, the plastic brought down over the former, then a vacuum sucks the plastic over the former, creating a plastic shell I've hated working with plastic since year 7, when I stabbed myself in the thumb when a shard of britle plastic decided to insert itself in the thumb, it's still there!

I didn't made plastics at school but prefered metalwork and jewellery over plastics I must admit.

it sometimes shifts inside the thumb and causes me pain, it was only a very tiny shard though, and lucily it's nowhere near any major blood vessles or muscle tissue

The email that all that was typed in was to the Chairman of Hotham Park council in Bognor Regis, as I am going to be on the committee for the reinstatement of the railway in Hotham Park! I might not be on much this week as I'm currently racking my brain for all suppliers of miniature equipment etc, plus I'm the key note speaker this Tuesday at the first meeting The original railway was ripped up and moved to another site because of a long running dispute between Arun Council and the owners. So we have to start all over again Then again I do love a challenge

Concerning the above post, our tender for application was turned down and a company known as CTS who run the Ferry Meadows Railway (which adjoins a station on the Nene Valley Railway) won the tender. Time for an update on my Curriculum Vitae:
I am not going to Chichester College, instead I am going to Northbrook College to do:
Aerospace Engineering (2years full time) at Shoreham Airport!
Mechanical Engineering (1 year full time)
Plus, I never went to the Great Cockrow, too far at the moment, although when I get a car etc, I shall become a proper member
My aim in life is to work at Biggin Hill on Spitfire's

My email address is now visible again, I originally took it down after I was receiving many spam emails, they seem to have all dissapeared now, so it's back up

I gave up trying to stop them. I get about 2000 a month but I let my ISP's spam filter get rid of them. There's still one every day or so slips through but the delete button handles those.
