My Bowman 234 Locos

Right here are the pictures everyone has been waiting for.

First up a family photo of all my locos to give you an idea of size of the Bowmans.

This one someone has repainted in terrible colours, this will all be going.

The two 234s I've got are slightly different I think this is the earlier one with plan piston rods.

Here is the one thing I cant fix and will have to get a repro part replacement.
One of the wheels on the pony is broken.

I think this is the newer of the two but will wait for a Bowman expert to correct me on this.

Here you can see it has fluted piston rods

This one has a slight dent in the front of the boiler havent decided on whether to leave it or try and fix it yet.

Need to get cracking and finish the burner now so I can give them a quick clean up and fire them on blocks and see if any other problems arise.

The second one needs new felts on the pistons but thats not a big thing.

wow they look great Tmuir! Really something you can get stuck into! I take it you're going to repaint both?
tmuir

Yes both will eventually be getting a complete strip down and repaint.
I'm thinking one will be green not sure what colour I will paint the other and ned to decide which one I will be restoring first.

The first has to be the one requiring the least work? I saw the Bowmans at STIA and they were very impressive!

Great collection Tony,

The Bowmans have a real nice look, and it goes without saying that the Mamod is a beauty, but Moulin makes me drool.

By the way, I lost track of the thread, how is the rolling stock coming along?
tmuir

Rolling stock is still sitting on my work bench waiting for me to find a Maroon coloured paint for it.
I can get every shade of red, pink and orange you can think of but not a simple maroon anywhere.
yosa

Surely a car paint. We have maroon cars here, infact mine's maroon, when it rains, otherwise its a dust beige.
tmuir

I can get one mixed up just havent got round to printing out a photo and taking it to a paint shop.
Need to get my printer working first as after the upgrade my computer is detecting my printer as a removeable drive.
yosa

My printer vanished o0f the system for two hours on Friday, and then came back all by itself.

They look great Tony... I'm sure they'll restore very well. To my mind they're in exactly the right condition for restoration because you don't have to worry about preserving original paint. Regarding the fluted piston rods, I think I read somewhere on the Yahoo Bowman board that the fluted ones are older than the plain ones. Might be worth a search there... I see you're a member!
tmuir

Yes I dont think the age old debate on whether or not to preserve the original paint applies to these two as they have no original paint.

Great to see 'em all lined up with their new siblings, Tony. Looking forward to
your updates and progress. My god man, you have so many projects going on!
How's the Renown?
SPOKESMAN

Look good Tony - they are certainly ripe for renovation. How about green (say a malachite green) and maroon!

The Renown I have left for the moment, I'm hoping to get a wreck of one that I can use to restore mine or vice versa.

Missed out on the last Renown got sniped in the last 8 seconds, more will come up though just have to wait.

Going to try and finish my SE3 before I start the Bowmans though as all I have left to do on it is clean and polish the cranks and flywheel.

I was thinking that but I've been having huge trouble getting a maroon paint for my rolling stock.
I've been told there is a new painting process that can paint car exhausts any colour you want. I'll have to look into it, to find out what they do to see if soft soldering can survive the process as the prospect of getting any colour as a high temp heat proof paint seems great.

Lined black then?
tmuir

I was only going to look at it and something happened.
Next thing I remember is me putting down the spanner and screwdriver and seeing this infront of me............

Dismantling it I noticed a few other things I had missed that need sorting on this one.

It also needs a new bogie wheel as one is chipped.
Its missing a nut that holds piston rod on the crank
The two nuts that hold the driving wheels onto the axles are missing. Kind of importent these ones.

I now need to degrease it and strip the grey paint back so I can repaint it.
Will probably use the black paint I used on the SE3 firebox for the frame haven't decided what I'm doing with the boiler yet.

The boilers are quiet complex for a toy.
The smokestack passes through the boiler to allow the steam to exit it.
It has two steam pipes that look to go inside the boiler right up to the steam dome.
Boiler is held to frame by large nut the screws onto the bottom of the smokestack.

Now to see about getting the parts...

If its brass, don't! It won't be after you've finished!
SPOKESMAN

VERY INTERESTING!

Great to see the constituent parts.
