My cat causing me problems

My cat just caught a baby rabbit.

Now rabbits are a pest in my country and they cause huge amounts of damage to the land.

The rabbit is still alive but in shock and will most likely die.

I shouldn't release it if it recovers and no animal haven would take it as its classified as an introduced pest .

So if it recovers I've most likely ended up with a pet rabbit.

My kids will be happy but I won't be................

You have a heart Tony...that's a good thing!

I at first thought she had caght a Quenda which up until a few years ago was on the threatened list, now that would of really upset me if she had.

But as soon as I got a good look at it I new it wasn't.

This is a Quenda and they live in my back yard.

Rabbits are poop machines....

Had some as a kid....

They are also quite boring ..in my opinion.

Good luck with the little ones...they all love animals and want to keep em.

I had guinea pigs as a kid and I'm trying to avoid having anything like that to be honest.
Too smelly to have in the house and could attract snakes if kept outside.

Rabbits can actually be house pets and are able to learn to poop in a proper place the way cats and dogs learn.

IS there a humane society in your area? Most places have someone who will take in orphaned wild animals.
A grown Rabbit can kill a Cat in little to no time.

No, let's accept it, Tony has a new pet.

I don't think it will make it through the night to be honest.
I've got it in a box with an old towel in a quiet dark place to help it get over the shock but it hasn't moved since I put it in the box so I suspect it may have a broken back. But I guess it could just be the shock keeping it still.

I will see what it is like in the morning.

I hope it makes it...   I have a soft spot for animals.
tmuir

Well its still alive and it has movement in all its limbs so it's back can't be broken but its still in shock, although it looks a bit better than last night.
Wallace

It'll be good for the kids if it survives. I hope it does.

The effects of shock to a rabbit can be delayed for about 48hrs. It actually effects their digestion system. Only know this as my ex was a rabbit freak

when I was a kid someone hit a rabbit with their car then left it on our doorstep, it recovered and was kept as a pet for several years.

my entire family are pet lovers, me mum expecially who once dodged traffic to get a dog from the middles of a busy road
and me dad once found a tame white rat in an alley way while doing his bin rounds, brought it home and it lived for several years with my Aunt.

Any chance we can see a picture of the rabbit?

that's good to hear tony! our first dog got hit by a car last year.   may she rest in peace.

Don't get your hopes too high as its now no longer taking food or water. If it doesn't drink by tonight it will be too late.
It has no external injuries but I suspect it has internal injuries.

Just leave it alone with some food and water as it might feel comfortable enough alone to drink on it's own. and first try giving it some water like in a teaspoon and see if it will drink. I really hope it's OK...

Dont blame the Cat, it is on its nature. Around here Rabbits too close to the house can be a pest. They dig around the house and outbuildings. We have a lot of Chipmunks around here, cute looking but a wprse pest than a Rat.
tmuir

I don't blame the cat as it really did us a favour.
The rabbits also steam homes from the Quendas so having one less around is a good thing.
Ace I tried to give it some water with an eye dropper and it wouldn't take it.
I'm pretty sure it won't survive, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.
But if by tonight it hasn't taken water that will be 24 hours without water which will be too late I think as its pretty small.

poor thing
tmuir

It's no longer suffering.
It died about 30 minutes ago.
Wallace

Sorry to hear it Tony. As I mentioned earlier, generally the shock disrupts their digestive system. Unless their was anything visible, I doubt the cat would have harmed it injury wise

I know we have come across quite a few at work that have somehow got lost as babies. Many do not survive

Sorry to hear this Tony.

You gave it a real good effort.

Glad to hear you did your best for the little rabbit. It's a shame he didn't make it though. Last year we had a little swallow which hadn't made it's first flight and had taken a rough landing, unfortunately those little birds cannot take off from the ground, it was trying to climb a wall but didn't have the strength and they'll only eat live food too, and have to be hand fed. Tried my best but it didn't make it.

It's good to hear of others being compassionate to animals in distress.
tmuir

Whats really annoying is I removed my cats collar the other week as the one she was wearing had gone rotten so I cut it off.
I had bought a new expensive 2 bell collar for her but like most things in the shops these days it wasn't really made properly.

My cat is average size but the CAT collar would of gone round her neck twice. All I can think is the place that made them also makes dog collars and they just changed the packaging as there was no way it would fit any cat and I hadn't gotten round to going to a different shop and buying another one.
Guess its moved up the to do list now.

I thought my cat had gotten old enough that it wouldn't hunt things like that any more but I guess I was wrong.
James

Sorry to hear it Tony.

Nobody can ever be too soft with animals, as people will know, I respect them more than people!

We had a Swallows nest fall (we weren't surprised, the build quality of the house was poor)and we rescued 4 young ones from the gutter of the lean to roof underneath.
They were lucky to survive as we were out for the evening and came home late and spotted the nest on the floor. They probably would not of survived the night in a cold wet gutter.

We nursed them as best we could but sadly, the runt died leaving 3.

This went on for 3 weeks, the parents were seen around regularly, so we kept them in a box on the window sill during the day went it wasn't raining.
The kids would love to take them out and feed them.

They were quite demanding, needing feeding every 2 hours. we found ourselves going to bed quite late, just make sure they were fed, they even went away with us for a long weekend to a caravan on the coast we use often!

They were getting quite big, and were pretty restless during a feeding session. 2 of them had there feed and without warning, flew out of the open window! the last one stayed for another couple of hours for a final feed before we encouraged him to take to the skys.

He's thinking about it...

And then he was gone, flying with the rest of his family   .
They hung around as a group of 5 for the rest of the summer, often perching together on the telegraph wire outside our house.

I hope they come back to us next year!

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Well, I'm sure that the rabbit was happier dying in a box as opposed to being ripped to bits.
jakesm
