My empire 46I recieved my Empire 46 steam engine. I got to say its small compared to the usual Empire bulk. It fits on a 6" by 8" metal base.
Heres the things that I need to do/ is wrong.
The engine is missing the slide valve (well actually more of a metal rod)
The boiler all bent up, apparently someone overtightened the boiler hold down.
The HEATER IS MISSING, going to have to find one, make one, or just make it alcohol fired
I hope that I can make a slidevalve type thig out of wood and test the engine on air then find or get a metal one made.

If you can find the right diameter brass rod that would do it and I bet someone like you would be handy with a file as I bet that would make a workable substitute. Brass is easier to file than steel but that would work too.

I just need to find out what type of thing to make first. Brass sounds like a better material to workwith too.
I hope I can make one out of wood since it would be eaiser to file and got alot more of it.

I admit to be curious about a burner conversion for heaterless Empires too. That's be a better one to try on than a cast iron base version, I suppose, since there's less mass to heat up.
The slide valve is at least half hollow on those, forming the exhaust pipe.
Hope you can make a go of it. If not, it's a learning exercise, and a source of parts for the next Empire

Remember that when exposed to steam, Wood expands. Sometimes to twice its size, just keep that in mind. It also becomes flexible.

It was cheap. Thats a good thing about it so, it will be like my first. More of a learning experience than a great engine out of the box.
I think I have figured out how to make the slidevalve and now just need to make a prototype.
