My first marine engine

Picked this up on the Bay.

Not really sure what it is. It arrived this morning and was love at first sight.  I spent a very enjoyable morning cleaning it up and lubricating.

It was very tight but, I found that this was due to old dried oil. Because it has a rather small flywheel, it took a while to get it started. Lots of water, oil and spluttering, but it finally fired up.

The boiler is interesting. It has pipes running below it with the burner fitting below the pipes. It is very solidly built with a hexagonal safety valve I have not seen before. No water level gauge, so I have to be careful.

The engine itself is very well made. Dual reciprocating pistons in a V configuration, with a control lever (probably for RC) on the top which directs steam to the two cylinders giving stop in the middle and then forward or reverse on either side. It also controls the speed of the engine.

I'll try to put a video up tomorrow.

Wasn't that the "Mamod" on Ebay?
I was watching it, you got it cheap!
johnreid

I like the looks of that one

Yes it was! I bid on that but the missus caught me.
Congrats, degiorgio1!
Les

Congratulations, a very interesting steam plant, have you a boat to put it in??
James

Very nice indeed! Lovely looking thing!
MooseMan

Excellent - great that a forum member got that!!

Nice twin...and that boiler design is a very common older "Stuart" styled external tubing for more steam generation efficiency...If  I would venture a guess...
MooseMan

I think you're right Mo....it looks like a Babcock style boiler, very good at raising a head of steam quickly.
CuriousSteam

So... that was you who beat me, oh just nice!!!!!
Nice buy!!! That lever in the top of the engine is for servo's, reverse, foward, netrual, incase you didn't know.
That would look awsome in a boat, I had plans you sunk my ship
tmuir

Looks a lot like the Reeves 2000 twin marine 'Popular' engine.
Nice buy

Sorry about that.

I put a maximum bid on it and promptly forgot about it, thinking it would go way beyond my bid.

Very surprised to find I had won it!

Similar layout, but not the same engine.

logoman

very nice indeed, I can't identify it though, I like the cylinder mounting block.
MooseMan

It looks machined to me rather than made out of castings, so that suggests a freelance home build, and a very nice one.

Can we see it running please?
calypso

I was just setting the tripod up!

She is a nice runner John...I agree- once you get the right size burner sorted out you will have quite the kit to work with!
calypso

Thanks Mo. I managed to get a larger burner to fit now and I also decided to get rid of all that black paint on the manifold.

Still a long way to go but she's definitely looking better already.

Running very well now. Self starting and nice long runs.

I'll do another video once i've got all the paint off.

By the way, thanks to Miles, I now know that the engine was built from plans from a design by Peter Arnot.

John - your twin actually has a more substantial flywheel - which is always an asset on a marine engine.. The drag from he water is really staggering when you put the boat in...The engine speed drops by half or more in the drink on smaller singles...

Good luck on what ever you do with it!!
kusuchi

Nicely machined engine.

Good job on the ID, Miles.

Now you need a boat, John.  Welcome to a future filled with ever increasing pleasure and constantly dwindling bank accounts.

Like the rest of the steam world on steroids.

I know Roger, it's frightening.

Won't stop me trying to get it afloat though.
