My first Meccano project

With the Meccano I have recently purchased, and still purchasing!, I plan to make this:

I am probably going to invest in a larger stationary engine, if the MM1 can't take the strain, if it can't, I'll use the TE1A until I find a suitable replacement.
Steely

Minor 2 perhaps.
James

A WILESCO!! they have speed control and are more powerful. a wilesco roller can pull 10kg whereas a mamod tractor can pull 3 pounds
Steely

Yes good idea, then the Wilesco tractor can take the load from the carts in a trailer straight to SM's house.
James

use the loco mobile!

have tanks full of guinness on the trucks and then deliver ti to sandmans house steely!

That's what I was trying to say. The locomobile will probably get there on one tank of water.
James

AYE!

and it has a big chimney that could be disguised as the winding house chimney
Steely

Aye.

I would like to have a Wilesco mobile one day to see what they're like.

Good luck with the project MTA lets see if it gets done now.
Mamodman123

Come on guys!

Use a mamod stationary, thats what they are for!!!!!

I don't think a TE1a or a locomobile will look very nice sat under that.

Mamod and meccano are a match made in heaven!
Steely

We can't argue with that James.
MTA

I'm going to make the underside hollow, and fit a pipe from the chimney upto the side of the winding house. I will use the Locomobile, as James said, speed control and power! Where'd the idea of guinness and SM come from????????
Mamodman123

the locomobile?

WHY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Steely

Me and James came up with the guiness because you said they were something to with beer.
MTA

oh, I can see where you have become confused, I am cosmetically restoring a loco that worked in the Guinness Brewery, and SM volunteered to help! MM: I am using the Locomobile as it is the most powerful loco I have, plus it has speed control and the pressure is more controllable, plus it is what is known as a portable, basically a stationary on wheels!

An SE3 would sit under there and do the job a lot easier! probably for longer aswell

Try the minor one first though MTA! you've got nothing to lose!

The Mk IV SP3 crane.

MTA

SPOKESMAN

Last time I looked, the crane was made of, errr, Meccano!
James

yeh! so make a new thread in the board called MECCANO about it!!
SPOKESMAN

This is a Meccano thread, I already have a thread relating to the crane, this thread applies tomy crane too.
James

no it doesnt mike, this thread is about mtas err thing.

make a new thread in the board called meccano specially for your really dudey crane

Sorry, thread title is Meccano. Not MTAs thing. End of.

I've tried to tell him Lewis, but unfortunatly he's fixated on Willesco
Lewis

he has gone to the dark side
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

Always was on the dark side

Only kidding MTA, still think a Mamod would power that meccano project better1
Lewis

IMHO this is my opinion of wilesco
yes there are very good nice and powerfull models but 1 cheaply made made from recycled metal 2 dont get the charm of mamod
Mamodman123

Yeah that pretty much sums them up to be honest,

Listen and learn MTA
Lewis

much rather have a nice se3 simple powerfull and tons of charm from a bygone era
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

how is yours doing Lewis? everything ok?
Lewis

just about to say yep all ok still havent a chimney just cleaning it now i am going to do a photo of all my engines later so i am making them all shiny cant clean the boiler thought its hard to get round because of the soldering
Mamodman123

Which boiler is hard to clean?
Lewis

se3 and se2a done the se2a though clean need to do the se3 boiler
MTA

It came to me that I cant use the MM1 because the trucks have to go up AND down, and the MM1 only runs in one direction, so I need any Mamod engine that runs in both directions!
Mamodman123

I was thinking that MTA, but i thought you had a cunning device set up. Maybe, you could somehow pull it up the hill with the Minor 1. Then switch the drive over to a Meccano built countershaft?
MTA

will need a braking system of some sort Or I could fit gearing that could reverse the drive, like a clutch or something
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

Yes you will need some sort of clutch, well Wallace will be able to help there for sure!

I think adding a clutch, and more gears will be more fun than buying a reversing engine
MTA

yeh, once I get those nuts and bolts and find some cheap axles, I'll then go onto bits and pieces shop and get some gears
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

Sandman bought a load of axels
MTA

I was trying to find that auction, but could only find those 7.99 plus 6.50 postage onces from bits or pieces
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

The one SM bought was a 3.99 buy now at some point I think, I considered buying it, but didn't bother in the end, as I only needed one more axel

When do you plan to get this project finsihed by then MTA?
MTA

byt the meet, but its not what you would call difficult so it should be finished long before then
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

Lets hope so, maybe you could do a step by step building of it? like Mikes Boat?
MTA

will do! Although I won't show pics/vids of it running till February, to keep you lot on tenterhooks!

MTA

well, if you really wanted to see it that much, then I could do a vid
Sandman

These are the ones I bought MTA. Arrived this morning no probs.

I know! I was looking for those because MM said he'd seen them, I could only find bitsorpieces lot for 7.99, you pipped me to the post SM!
Sandman

I'm sure there will be more soon MTA. Meccano seems to be quite popular on ebay.
Mamodman123

There won't be too much left with me, you and MTA buying it all
MTA

by the way, I've just put my MSS loco back together, the top right hand screw on the left hand cylinder block was quite tricky to put back in, as I had to slip the bolt over the thread, and its quite tight in there! I'm going to see if the proper MSS tablets give a longer run than the Mamod ones
Mamodman123

It's all a tight fit. You are refering to the one that screws into the reverse/forward block?

Just have to make sure it's all lined up properly

not sure if the mss tablets will be any better. Let me know, because i'm firing my blue loco on tablets.
MTA

oops, I meant the top right hand one, the one that has a bolt and doesnt screw into the forward reverse block, I'm about to steam her up now, I'll let you know how it goes!

I see. Make sure the screws are done up really tight around the pistons, otherwise you will loose pressure around the gaskets before they get into the cylinders

Good luck with it MTA, let us know. Maybe a picture in steam?
Lewis

MSS tablets light quicker than Mamod ones, I got at least three more minutes with the MSS ones than I would have done with Mamod ones. As I said, I've got to get a able for my phone, plus my Mum's is broken

May get some Mss tablets if you recommend them MTA? the Mamod ones are out before the pressure is up
MTA

actually, these MSS tablets are so good, the safety valve was blowing off
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

will buy a box of them for my blue loco then

the remaining Mamod tablets I have left are fused together anyway
Lewis

MTA

I was surprised that MSS now put their tablets in re sealable bags Better than the Mmaod ones where you cant put them back in the box as the wrapping doesnt go back the way it was
Mamodman123

MTA wrote:

Well they do go back in, you ease them up like a cigarette, then take as many as you need. No need to take the whole bag out the box

The ones I have are 1980's ones anyway
Lewis

i just stuff it all in at once
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

the old tablets do become quite brittle, so when you try to separate them, they do indeed crumble and break
Lewis

dosent matter they go in the burner easer and light quicker when they are broke up
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

When I fired the SP2 the broken bits of tablet started to shake themselves out of the burner, and continued to burn on my base

Still can't stand them!
Lewis

do that on my sr1a they make a mess of the paint dont they
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

They turn it black

Shouldn't use solid fuel burners on older engines either! can melt the paint on the bases for some reason
Lewis

thats poor it should be heat proof
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

I don't think they were designed for something to be burning so hot and so close to the base.

The meths flame is usually way above the base, solid fuel is practically touching it
Lewis

aye plus solid fuel make the crome tarnish even quicker
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:
aye plus solid fuel make the crome tarnish even quicker

Well I've never put a meths burner in an SP, as the majority of them don't fit in the firebox
Lewis

really ?
Mamodman123

Yup, i'll do a picture later
Lewis

not even the minor burner
Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

Not sure, it might do, but there is no point in having a Minor 1 burner in an SP2 or SP4/5 is there?
Lewis

wouldent even touch an sp5

The old SP5
Lewis

aye the new one would probably melt

Next it will be pink champagine and cavier

I've still got that M158 on watch, no doubt it will go crazy in the last few minutes Or I'm sure there will be a few Bowmans for sale in February

Ay up someone is interested in a Bowman or two.

What happened to, and I quote:

"I'm not a stationary man, a probably never will be"

Changes his mind more than a Tv channel
MTA

well, not a Mamod stationary man as yet, I want the best at the moment, but not pink champagne and caviar, why any would want to eat fish eggs is beyond me Bowmans to me are the finest stationaries around, and show just what is happening to engineering standards of today, dying.

Fair enough MTA I agree with the Bowmans, they are wonderful machines. Engineering in toy steam engines has gone way down hill!

For me, nothing beats the SE4!
