My first restoration project, and what a project!!I've just been emailed by Amberley Museum to confirm I allowed to restore this:
This loco is built to the unusual gauge of 1' 10" and was built by William Spence in 1920. 11 were built to work in the Guinness Brewery in Ireland. I am not restoring it to working order, just cosmetically. Also notice that the cylinders are on top of the boiler. These locos are quite squat as they worked up a spiral tunnel from the brewery to exchange sidings with Ireland's rail network. The loco's would be lifted into a transformer wagon:
The wheels of the William Spence loco would then drive the wheels you can see here, in turn this would drive the wheels of the transformer wagon via chains.

Sounds like a great project. Are you doing this on your own? Seems to be the kind of thing best done by a group. Very big job.

Erm. I think we should be more supportive of MTA in his restoration efforts MM. We all have skills that we could use to help him in his quest.
Let me be the first to volunteer. MTA, if you need a guitarist, I'm your man.

I wa supportive, but I still don't really know what it is SM, I'll help anyway I can, If I can.
I need to know what it does first though

It's a steam loco MM. Hauled Guinness Beer barrels from the brewery, through a spiral tunnel, upto the sidings to transfer the barrels to the main network. Manx, there'll be two people surveying what I'll be doing, and helping me on the way. SM, I'm not sure a guiarist will be much use

Right cheers MTA, good luck with it anyway, I know nothing about that sort of thing. If it was a Mamod loco then we'd be ok
I can see why SM is interested if Guiness was involved

I feel better knowing someone else will be around. That is a big job but I bet it will be loads of fun.

It's got to be wheeled into the building behind, as I'll be working on it in the closed season, as it is on public display outside for the whole year. That'll be hard work, it hasn't moved in years! This will also be better when i allow the paint to dry, of course it will rain during the winter, so it might wash it off if I've only just applied it, therefore making me do it again, also, I think I shall need some of this Rust remedy stuff that MM uses. I've also got to make something to lock the firebox door, as kids throw stones in there There is another loco like this somewhere... I'm also updating the display signs, as the rain has gotten through the laminate...

You might have to sand blast it MTA, rust remedy only comes in a small bottle . Sand blasting will get it down to the bare metal if thats what you want?

we don't have any sand blasting facilities at Amberley (I think). Best get out the wet and dry

Should be ok MTA they usually don't come loose as they turn from right to left when tight

I put it up on the highest shelf in the house, in case it tried to knock me out with the cylinder What was strange was that I was typing a post for the old forum, then I heard this ping, and the cylinder hit me in the back!!! I had ran it two hours previously, the pressure is still in their, as there's no way to release it with no whistle...

Put some thread locking compound on the trunnio screw if you are worried. I have never had that happen, so all I concluded is that it was loose to start with, poor thread or something is bent or outta balance.

MTA

I'll try it as is tomoorow, if it happens again, I'll use some Loctite thats suitable for threads.
