B&Q, Halfords and DIY or motor factors outlets Lew.
Lewis

ok ill try them tonight
Mamodman123

I go to Halfords usually, although Wilkinsons do a close match for 2.99
Lewis

got one from halfords now its called nissan flame red

Rosso red is a better match, should be ok though!
Steely

Wow that was quick postage. I'm glad you've got it Lewis and i hope you like it. As MM said rossi red is a very good match and that was the colour I used when restoring my flatbase SE2.
Wallace

Nice stuff Lewis

Should come up real nice.
Christmas aint far away anyway

Re the paint. The red in mamods seems to differ slightly anyway, so there is room for some slight difference.

The red MM mentions seems to be good, I've seen it here.

I paint from a airbrush, so I just get a smash repair shop to mix up a some for very little cost.
I have a 500ml tin of if, but due to variations also have 2 other tins of red paint
SPOKESMAN

WE had a thread back along about the green - colour match is notoriously difficult! If in doubt take the engine to the shop and compare!

There is great variance over the years with Mamod 'green' and Mamod 'red'! generally Green=Ford Highland Green. red=Ford Rosso Red.

Although my Peugeot Diablo red is far from it either . . . .
Mamodman123

Yeah red is red at the end of the day! I think my car is Rosso red thats why I used it.....(spare cans)
Lewis

ok guys a quick update

engine frame is done firebox done and in the process of spraying the base pics later tonight
SPOKESMAN

Good stuff Lew!
Lewis

ok i need to knwo what the feet were on thia flatbase where they rubber knobs or rivets or somethink like that

all i need to do now is straighten the crank shaft
the boiler strap is in bad looking condition so i best give it a good polish then after the paint has been left for a while to set really solid i will asemble it up.then i just a 2 wick burner

oh yes i must ask witch bits on a mamod where sprayed with heatproof was it just the firebox or other parts

anyway here are a few pics of it including one of a very shiny base plate which i did with a drill and a polisher

enjoy keep looking here for more pics etc

give me any hints do do things for instance things like remmeber to paint inside the chimney and get that paint of the thread coller for the safty valve

oh yes need to tidy up the flywheel and make it shiny get those bits of paint of which have overlapped a bit

SPOKESMAN

Rubber, although I have one which appears to be wood.
Steely

It's looking 10 times better already Lewis. Well done.
tmuir

Looking good Lewis.
Mamodman123

Make sure you don't spill any meths on the base otherwise the paint will blister or strip off!
Wallace

Looks fantastic Lewis

Re your questions about what parts were painted in heatproof paint, and also how to remove the green from the safety valve thread?

The red bases of Mamods are enamel as far as I can tell.

I did a recent spray on a SE2 base that I had for resale. I went to use acrylic (my compressor for airbrush was broken). Unforutnately when stripping the base I missed the smallest bit of original paint near the lamp holder, and putting the acrylic on it caused it to blister, so I had to restart.

Acrylic over enamel = bad.
Enamel over acrylic = 90% ok.

Also, enamel would handle heat better, so it would be the stuff for bases.
I know regular car touch up sprays (Holts esp) are acrylic, so be careful.

Probably the engine frame is enamel too, on a minor engine. It might be proper heatproof stuff, but doubt it.

As far as getting the paint off the s/v thread?
Well if you can get the valve screwed in and out ok, don't worry, it'll come off eventually. Just be careful the valve doesn't stick into the paint a bit, and get hard to turn.
To get it off the top, just some real careful scraping

Are you going to fire it after resto?

Also, what green did you use?

Great job mate
