My Garden Railway

Finally, I have the space and permission to start my garden railway! Here's three pics to give you a rough idea of the run:



The soil bed by the fence will be a terminus/steaming bay with a station, run round loop and a steaming area away from the main running line.



The slabs will become a tunnel, and the line will swing round to the right to line up against the patio edge.



The line will run along the edge of the path, and will climb a gradient to a terminus on the patio It'll be all Mamod track, and later I might add a road to the side for road going mobiles to go on

So what do you all think?

what gauge are you building it in 32mm or 45mm?

i still have to talk my grandad into building me a 45mm garden railway because he has a huge garden!!

at present he will not budge but hell break at sometime

after continous nagging

Nice size, just make sure you protect the track from the lawn mower.

32mm, as I'm a British Narrow Gauge person, and 45mm is more continental stock

I find that prototypical length trains are a must on layouts, otherwise I tend to find it a bit boring

Our gardener (yes, we have a paid gardener ) hardly ever comes anyway. Although I think he'll get the message when his lawnmower flings out pieces of black metal at him

I'm starting to regret changing my Mamod to 45mm as there are so many other locos I want and they are all 32mm.
Good 32mm track is hard to buy in OZ but as I plan to just buy rails and make my own sleepers gauge doesn't really matter

You need not tmuir, 45mm has it's benefits. Most live steam engines can be adjusted from 32mm to 45mm, and vice versa. Although as you say, most engines are in 32mm, don't see why to be honest

Maybe have both? Just get a cheap curcuit of lightweight 32mm track from somewhere and have both

Looks like a good space to use MTA! I take it you are using your MSS loco! Get an uprated valve and meths, you'll need it

Definitely the MSS loco, I'll probably get the SV and MB with my birthday money (if I get any )

Get some rolling stock aswell! Needs to be dead level aswell

He can't, I keep buying all the rolling stock on ebay! Think I have enough now though, will give someone else a chance.

Ive got more than enough, 2 sets(so thats 4), 3 separate boxed wagons/lumber wagons,and 2 passenger coaches! I want a guards van!

I've got a flat bed wagon, a log wagon, and a guards van (not cheap), got another log wagon and a coal wagon on the way (sent cheque off today).

Want to do like MTA and set up a more permanent loop of track in the garden.

I tried a garden railway but it was really difficult! The track isn't cheap either! . For a mamod loco their own track is the best for it!

I probably won't get Mamod Rolling Stock, more like kits from IPEngineering and PPS as I'm that type of guy

They are probably a bit lighter, so you would cope a bit better round a bigger circuit

But saying that... if you have a Mamod loco then Mamod rolling stock looks great

i use the LGB feild railway stock like tippers ect

aulthough they are european they look good behind my cheddar iver

have a look on www.buffersmodelrailways.com they have a lot of LGB toytrain wich ranges from about £14 for a flat wagon to about £"% i think... aulthough 45mm i was reading a article in RM magazine about a very simple conversion to 32mm

I think number of people have converted LGB to 32 mm gauge, you might even find kits to do it comprising of different wheelsets that just drop in.

If you will excuse the blatent plug You might find some cheap lightweight rolling stock here that suits well if you do not mind plastic or having to modify couplings (or use paperclips!!)

I copied the IP lollipop range with ply bodies on old tinplate chassis.
