Back in the old days, steam lines were often wrapped with rope. I've got a small Krick engine that came with a small roll of twisted cotton string that did a perfect imitation of the old style. It provides some insulation but the best part is that the steam line is no longer hot enough to burn you. This technique really gives an attractive old world look when its done properly.

After I took the twist ties off, the glue was dry, so I steamed the engine, & the felt stayed ON.
the 2nd section I only gotta do now (down to steam chest)
I'm very pleased with the results!

Clinton, with one layer of felt down, perhaps you could now wind heavy cotton string around it to make it look more like the way they did the real thing...it would also hold the felt snug and prevent it lifting off.

That's a great idea, Clinton, looks more authentic as well. BTW, where did you get the felt from as I need to make some replacement felt oiling washers, that go in the cylinder, block for my early engines. I think the wad punches are going to be the expensive bits though.
Cheers
Chris.
